Metallics TS6812 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use a zinc plated wedge anchor outdoors or in a wet area?
Zinc plating is a mild, indoor-duty coating. The TS6812 is zinc plated steel, which is fine for dry interior concrete (equipment pads inside a mechanical room, strut and conduit racks, interior base plates), but for exterior exposure, wash-down areas, or anything coastal you want stainless or hot dip galvanized instead.
2) What size hole do I drill for a 3/4 inch wedge anchor?
Wedge anchors drill the same as their nominal diameter, so a 3/4 inch anchor like the TS6812 takes a 3/4 inch carbide bit in a hammer drill. Drill deeper than the intended embedment so dust has somewhere to go, clean the hole, then drive the anchor until the nut is seated and torque it to expand the wedge clip.
3) Will a wedge anchor hold in block or brick, or is it concrete only?
Wedge anchors like the TS6812 are solid concrete anchors. They work by a clip expanding against the wall of a drilled hole, which needs solid, uncracked base material. In hollow block, brick, or grout they can blow out the cell. For hollow masonry use a sleeve anchor or a screw anchor sized for block, or fill and use adhesive anchoring.
4) Is the TS6812 wedge anchor removable or reusable if I need to move the equipment?
No. Once the wedge clip on a 3/4 inch anchor like this has set in concrete, the body stays in the hole. You can back off the nut and washer and take the fixture off, but the anchor itself does not come back out. If you need a relocatable fixing, a drop-in anchor with a threaded rod or a bolt into a threaded insert is the better choice.
5) Why would I pick an 8-1/2 inch anchor instead of a shorter 3/4 inch one?
Length buys you two things: embedment depth in the concrete, and grip range through whatever you are fastening. At 8-1/2 inches the TS6812 is for cases where the fixture is thick, there is a leveling grout bed or topping slab to pass through, or the spec calls for deep embedment. If you are only bolting down a thin plate on a clean slab, a shorter 3/4 inch anchor is easier to set and takes less hole depth.
6) Does the Metallics TS6812 come with a nut and washer, or do I buy those separately?
Wedge anchors ship as a complete assembly: the stud body, the expansion clip, and a nut and washer on the threaded end. Each box of 10 TS6812 anchors gives you 10 complete fixings, so nothing else is needed beyond a 3/4 inch carbide bit and a torque wrench to set them.
