Metallics JTS3234 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size hole do I drill for the Metallics JTS3234 wedge anchor?
The JTS3234 is a 3/8 inch diameter wedge anchor, so the hole in the concrete is drilled with a 3/8 inch carbide bit. Wedge anchors are drilled to match the anchor diameter exactly, and the hole needs to be deeper than the embedment you want so the clip can expand and so drill dust has somewhere to go. Anchor length is 2-3/4 inches overall.
2) Can I use a 3/8 x 2-3/4 wedge anchor in block or brick instead of poured concrete?
Wedge anchors like the JTS3234 are intended for solid poured concrete. In hollow block or the mortar joints of brick there is nothing solid for the expansion clip to bite into, so the anchor can spin or pull. For hollow block, a sleeve anchor or a toggle-style fastener is the right call instead.
3) Is the Metallics JTS3234 anchor rated for outdoor or damp locations?
The JTS3234 is a steel anchor with a zinc plated finish. Zinc plating is a mild corrosion coating suited to dry interior work, parking garages and similar sheltered conditions. For exterior exposure, wet locations, coastal air or anywhere treated lumber contacts the anchor, specify a stainless or hot dip galvanized wedge anchor instead.
4) How many 3/8 x 2-3/4 wedge anchors come in a jar of Metallics JTS3234?
One hundred anchors per jar, supplied in Metallics' jar pack. The jar includes the nut and washer assembled on each anchor, which is how wedge anchors ship; you do not order those separately.
5) Can a wedge anchor be removed or reused once it is set?
No. A wedge anchor expands permanently against the hole wall when the nut is torqued, so it cannot be backed out and used again. The nut and washer come off so the fixture can be removed, but the anchor body stays in the concrete. If you need a fastener you can take out and replace, use a female threaded concrete insert or a drop-in anchor instead of the JTS3234.
6) What are 3/8 inch wedge anchors typically used for on electrical jobs?
This is the standard concrete fastener for hanging electrical work: strut channel and trapeze supports, panel and enclosure backing, transformer and disconnect mounting, cable tray supports and conduit racks fastened to slab, deck or wall. Metallics catalogues the JTS3234 with its electrical fastener line for exactly that work.
7) What thread size nut fits the Metallics JTS3234 anchor?
A 3/8-16 nut threads onto it, which is the standard coarse thread on a 3/8 inch wedge anchor, and that is the nut supplied on the anchor. Useful to know if you are replacing a nut lost on site or swapping in a flange or nylon insert nut.
