Metallics TS387D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size hole do I drill for a Metallics TS387D 3/8 inch wedge anchor?
A 3/8 inch wedge anchor is set in a 3/8 inch hole drilled with a carbide-tipped bit sized to the ANSI standard for that bit diameter. The anchor body is the same nominal diameter as the hole, so the TS387D goes into a 3/8 inch drilled hole and the clip expands against the sides as the nut is tightened. Drill the hole deeper than the intended embedment so dust can settle below the anchor.
2) Why would I need a 7 inch long wedge anchor instead of a shorter one?
Length on a wedge anchor covers the thickness of whatever you are fastening plus the nut, washer, and the embedment into concrete. At 7 inches the TS387D is for thick standoffs or stacked material, heavy base plates, strut racks on a thick slab, or anywhere you are going through grout, sleepers, or a topping layer and still need real depth in the concrete below. If your fixture is thin, a shorter 3/8 anchor sets the same with less protruding thread.
3) Can I use the TS387D wedge anchor in block or brick?
Wedge anchors like the 3/8 x 7 TS387D are designed for solid, poured concrete. Hollow block, brick, and mortar joints do not give the clip a solid wall to expand against, and the anchor can spin or pull. For hollow masonry use a sleeve anchor or a toggle rated for the base material.
4) Is the Metallics TS387D 3/8 x 7 wedge anchor suitable for outdoor or damp locations?
The TS387D is a zinc plated carbon steel wedge anchor. Zinc plating is a mild corrosion coating meant for dry interior use or protected locations. For exterior, wet, or corrosive conditions, step up to a hot dip galvanized or stainless wedge anchor instead.
5) Can I hang strut, conduit racks, and electrical equipment off these wedge anchors?
That is the usual use. The TS387D is catalogued for electrical work and is the type of anchor used to fasten strut channel, trapeze hangers, panel backing, and equipment bases to a concrete deck or slab. The 7 inch length gives room to go through a thick plate or standoff and still bury enough of the anchor in the concrete.
6) Is a wedge anchor removable, or should I use a drop-in anchor instead?
A wedge anchor is a one-time, permanent set. Once the clip expands you can take the nut and the fixture off, but the anchor body stays in the concrete and has to be cut or ground flush. If you need to remove and remount equipment repeatedly, use a female drop-in or internally threaded anchor and a machine bolt instead of the TS387D.
7) How many anchors come in a box of Metallics TS387D?
Each box holds 50 of the 3/8 x 7 zinc plated wedge anchors, packaged as a box rather than loose or bulk. Each anchor ships complete with its nut and washer, which is standard for a wedge anchor, so there is no separate hardware to order for setting them.
