Metallics TS385 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size hole do I drill for a Metallics TS385 3/8 inch wedge anchor?
The TS385 is a 3/8 inch diameter wedge anchor, so it goes into a 3/8 inch hole drilled with a carbide bit. Wedge anchors are drilled to the nominal anchor diameter, which lets the anchor be driven through a fixture hole of the same size into the hole below. Drill the hole deeper than the embedment you need so dust has somewhere to go.
2) Is the Metallics TS385 anchor suitable for outdoor or damp locations?
It's a zinc plated carbon steel wedge anchor, which is a mild corrosion coating meant for dry interior concrete work, machine rooms, slabs and ceilings. For exterior exposure, wash-down areas or anywhere it sees moisture or chlorides, go with a stainless steel wedge anchor or a hot dip galvanized anchor instead.
3) Will a wedge anchor work in block or brick, or only concrete?
Wedge anchors like the TS385 are designed for solid poured concrete only. The expansion clip needs a dense, uniform base material to bite into, so hollow CMU, brick and grout-filled block are the wrong application. For block walls use a sleeve anchor or a screw anchor rated for hollow masonry.
4) Can I use a 3/8 x 5 wedge anchor to hang strut, conduit racks or electrical equipment from a concrete deck?
That's exactly what it's for. The TS385 is a 3/8 x 5 inch wedge anchor sold for electrical fastening work, which covers strut channel, conduit hangers, trapeze racks, panel and enclosure mounting into poured concrete. The 5 inch length gives you room to anchor through a thick fixture base or standoff and still get full embedment in the slab.
5) Do I need a 5 inch anchor, or is a shorter 3/8 wedge anchor enough?
Length is about how much material you're clamping plus the embedment you need in the slab. The 5 inch TS385 is the long option in the 3/8 inch family, for cases where the fixture base, shim stack, standoff or topping slab eats several inches before you reach sound concrete. If you're bolting a thin bracket flat to a slab, a shorter 3/8 anchor is the better choice because you won't be left with excess thread above the nut.
6) How many Metallics TS385 anchors come in a box?
The TS385 ships 50 anchors to a box. Nuts and washers come assembled on wedge anchors, so each piece is ready to drive without separate hardware. If you're laying out a long strut run, count four anchors per support point and order box quantities against that.
7) What is the Metallics part number for the 3/8 x 5 zinc wedge anchor?
Order it as Metallics TS385. That number covers the 3/8 x 5 inch zinc plated steel wedge anchor in the 50 piece box, and it's the single configuration under that model designation.
