Metallics TS385D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size hole do I drill for a Metallics TS385D 3/8 inch wedge anchor?
A 3/8 inch wedge anchor is set in a 3/8 inch hole drilled with a carbide bit sized to the anchor diameter, which is how all wedge anchors work: the bit matches the anchor's nominal diameter. The TS385D is a 3/8 by 5 inch anchor, so drill the 3/8 inch hole deeper than your embedment, clean it out, and drive the anchor through the fixture until the clip seats.
2) Is the Metallics TS385D wedge anchor OK for outdoor or damp locations?
The TS385D is zinc plated steel. Zinc plating handles dry interior work and incidental moisture, but it is not a stainless anchor. For exterior exposure, wet mechanical rooms, pool areas, coastal sites or anywhere subject to washdown, use a stainless wedge anchor instead.
3) Can I use these wedge anchors in block, brick or hollow-core deck?
Wedge anchors are a solid-concrete fastener. They rely on a clip expanding against sound, solid base material, so they belong in poured concrete, not in hollow block cells, brick face shells, or hollow-core plank. For CMU or brick use a sleeve anchor or a screen tube and adhesive; for hollow deck use a toggle or a through-bolt.
4) How thick a fixture can I fasten with a 3/8 x 5 inch wedge anchor?
The 5 inch overall length is split between embedment into the concrete and the part sticking out through whatever you are bolting down. Wedge anchors need the expansion clip fully below the concrete surface, so with typical 3/8 inch embedment you have roughly a couple of inches left for the fixture, washer and nut. If you are through-bolting thick steel base plates or stacked channel, measure your stack and confirm you still have enough shank in the hole.
5) Are wedge anchors removable, or should I use something else for temporary mounting?
Wedge anchors are a permanent fastener. Once the clip expands in the hole the body stays in the concrete, and the most you can do is back the nut off and cut the stud flush. For equipment you expect to relocate, or for anything you will unbolt repeatedly, use a female anchor such as a drop-in or a concrete screw you can back out instead of the 3/8 by 5 TS385D.
6) How many anchors come in a box of Metallics TS385D?
These ship 50 anchors to a box. Each anchor comes as an assembly with the nut and washer on the threaded end, so you are not buying hardware separately. For a job hanging strut, pipe hangers or equipment pads, figure your anchor count per fixture and round up to full boxes.
