Metallics TS510SS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What diameter hole do I drill for a 5/8 inch wedge anchor?
A 5/8 inch wedge anchor like the TS510SS is set in a 5/8 inch hole, drilled with a carbide hammer-drill bit, since wedge anchors use a hole the same nominal diameter as the anchor. Drill deeper than the embedment you need so dust and cuttings have somewhere to go, blow the hole clean, then drive the anchor and torque the nut to expand the wedge clip.
2) Can I use a stainless wedge anchor outdoors or in a wet area?
Yes. The TS510SS is stainless steel, so it suits exterior concrete, wash-down areas, pool decks, and coastal or chemically damp environments where a zinc-plated carbon steel anchor would rust and stain the slab. For dry interior work a plated anchor does the same mechanical job at lower cost, so stainless is the choice when corrosion is the concern.
3) Is a 10 inch long wedge anchor overkill, or do I need that length?
The 10 inch length on the TS510SS is there to pass through thick material before reaching the concrete. Wedge anchors expand at the embedded end, so the anchor has to be long enough for your required embedment PLUS the thickness of everything you are fastening down, plus the washer and nut. For a thick steel base plate, a grouted sill, a timber post base, or anchoring through an equipment pad topping, that extra length is what gets the wedge into sound concrete. If you are only bolting a thin plate flat to a slab, a shorter 5/8 anchor is the right call.
4) Will a wedge anchor work in block or brick, or only solid concrete?
Wedge anchors, including the 5/8 x 10 TS510SS, are for solid poured concrete. They rely on a clip expanding against the wall of a drilled hole, and hollow CMU or brick does not give the confinement to hold that. For block walls use a sleeve anchor or a screen tube with epoxy instead.
5) Does the TS510SS anchor come with a nut and washer?
Yes. A wedge anchor is supplied as a complete assembly, the threaded stud with the expansion clip already on it plus the nut and washer, so nothing else is needed to set it. You will need a carbide bit matching the 5/8 inch anchor diameter and a hammer drill, which are not included.
6) Can I use the TS510SS to anchor electrical equipment and strut to a concrete floor?
That is the intended use. Metallics catalogues the TS510SS among its electrical fasteners and anchors, and a 5/8 inch wedge anchor is the common size for securing transformer pads, switchgear, generator skids, and heavy strut or rack bases to a slab. The stainless body also suits mechanical rooms and exterior pad-mounted gear.
7) How many anchors are in a box of Metallics TS510SS?
Ten anchors per box. That works out to two or three typical base plates at four bolts each, so for a larger structural layout order multiple boxes to avoid coming up short mid-set.
