Metallics TS508SS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size hole do I drill for the Metallics TS508SS 5/8 inch wedge anchor?
A 5/8 inch wedge anchor is set in a 5/8 inch diameter hole, drilled with a carbide hammer-drill bit, to a depth at least as deep as the embedment you need. The TS508SS is the 5/8 x 8-1/2 inch size, so the hole has to be deep enough to take the embedded portion of that 8-1/2 inch length plus a little extra for dust.
2) Can I use a wedge anchor like the TS508SS in block or brick instead of concrete?
No. Wedge anchors, including this 5/8 inch stainless one, are for solid poured concrete only. The wedge has to expand against a solid wall of concrete to develop load; in hollow block or brick the hole wall crushes or breaks out. For block, use a sleeve anchor, a screw anchor rated for masonry, or an adhesive anchor with a screen tube.
3) Is the Metallics TS508SS wedge anchor stainless steel, and does that make it OK outdoors?
Yes, the TS508SS is a stainless steel wedge anchor. That is the version you want for exterior slabs, loading docks, parking structures, pool decks and wet or washdown areas where a plain carbon steel zinc-plated anchor would rust at the collar and stain the concrete. For dry interior anchoring, the plated carbon steel equivalent is the usual choice.
4) Is the Metallics TS508SS a through-bolt anchor I can install with the fixture in place?
Yes. A wedge anchor is a through-fixture anchor: drill through the fixture hole into the concrete, blow the hole clean, drive the anchor through the fixture, then tighten the nut to expand the wedge. The 8-1/2 inch length means you need clearance above the hole to drive and torque it, which matters in tight spots under equipment or near a wall.
5) How many anchors come in a box of Metallics TS508SS?
Ten anchors per box. The 5/8 x 8-1/2 inch stainless wedge anchor is packed in box quantity, so one box covers a ten-hole layout such as a pair of equipment bases or a run of column standoffs. Size the order in boxes of 10 rather than by the piece.
6) Does the Metallics TS508SS come with a nut and washer?
Wedge anchors ship as a complete assembly: threaded stud, expansion clip, nut and washer on the anchor. Nothing else is required to set it beyond a 5/8 inch carbide bit, a hammer drill, a blow-out bulb or vacuum, and a torque wrench or impact to pull the nut down.
