A 5/8 inch wedge anchor is installed in a 5/8 inch diameter hole, drilled with a carbide hammer-drill bit. The TS5080SS is a 5/8 x 8-1/2 inch anchor, so the hole must be deeper than the embedment you need, and you drill through the fixture where possible since the anchor is driven through the mounting hole.

Stainless steel, which is what the SS in TS5080SS denotes. That makes them the choice for exterior slabs, wet wells, pool decks, coastal work, and anywhere a carbon steel anchor would rust and stain the concrete. For dry interior anchoring, a plain or zinc wedge anchor of the same 5/8 inch diameter does the same mechanical job.

That length is for thick fixtures or deep embedment: base plates, heavy equipment pads, structural standoffs, guardrail and bollard bases, where the anchor has to pass through several inches of steel, grout, or timber before it ever reaches concrete. The usable embedment is the 8-1/2 inches minus the thickness of whatever you are clamping plus the nut and washer. If you are only fastening a thin plate or a strut channel to a slab, a shorter 5/8 inch wedge anchor is the better buy.

Wedge anchors are for solid concrete only. They work by a clip expanding against the wall of a drilled hole, and hollow block or brick will blow out before the anchor develops hold. For CMU or brick, use a sleeve anchor or a screen tube and adhesive instead. Poured concrete, including slabs and foundation walls, is where the 5/8 x 8-1/2 TS5080SS belongs.

Wedge anchors are supplied as a complete assembly: threaded stud, expansion clip, and a nut and washer already on the threaded end. You drive the anchor through the fixture, then tighten the nut to set the clip. Nothing else is needed beyond a 5/8 inch carbide bit, a hammer drill, a hole cleaning brush or blow-out bulb, and a torque wrench.

No. Once the clip expands in the hole the anchor is permanent. You can back the nut off and remove the fixture, but the stud stays in the concrete. If you need to come back out later, use a female type anchor such as a drop-in or a threaded insert rather than a 5/8 x 8-1/2 wedge anchor.
