Metallics TS508SSD – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What hole size do I drill for a 5/8 inch wedge anchor?
A 5/8 inch wedge anchor like the TS508SSD drills with a 5/8 inch carbide bit; wedge anchors are sized so the nominal anchor diameter equals the hole diameter. Drill the hole deeper than the embedment you want so the anchor can be driven flush, then tighten the nut to expand the wedge clip against the concrete.
2) Can a wedge anchor be used in block or brick, or only concrete?
Wedge anchors, including the 5/8 x 8-1/2 stainless TS508SSD, are made for solid poured concrete. In hollow block, brick, or grout-filled CMU the expansion clip has nothing solid to bite against, so a sleeve anchor or a screw-type masonry anchor is the right part for that base material.
3) Why choose a stainless wedge anchor instead of a plated one?
Stainless is the choice when the anchor sits outdoors, near water, in a wash-down area, or anywhere a zinc-plated anchor would rust and stain the concrete. The TS508SSD is the stainless version of the 5/8 x 8-1/2 wedge anchor, so it suits exterior equipment pads, rooftop curbs, pool and coastal work. Indoors and dry, a plated carbon steel wedge anchor does the same mechanical job for less.
4) Will an 8-1/2 inch long wedge anchor work for thick base plates or standoffs?
Yes, that is what the length is for. At 8-1/2 inches overall, the TS508SSD leaves plenty of shank above the slab for a thick base plate, grout bed, leveling nuts, or stacked shims while still reaching deep embedment in the concrete. For a thin plate bolted straight to a slab, a shorter 5/8 inch wedge anchor is the more practical pick.
5) Is a wedge anchor removable if I need to relocate equipment?
Not really. Once a wedge anchor is set, the clip is permanently expanded in the hole; you can back off the nut and knock the anchor below the surface and patch, but you cannot pull it and reuse it. If the mounting needs to come apart later, use a threaded insert or a removable-type anchor instead of the TS508SSD.
6) Does the TS508SSD come with a nut and washer?
Wedge anchors in this style ship as a complete assembly, with the nut and washer on the threaded end, which is how they are driven and then tightened to set the clip. Each box holds 25 anchors. You supply the carbide bit, a hammer drill, and a torque wrench or impact to tighten the nuts.
7) How many 5/8 inch stainless anchors are in a box, and can I buy less than a box?
The TS508SSD is sold as a box of 25 anchors, and box is the pack type, so 25 pieces is the unit. For a four-bolt equipment pad that covers six pads with one spare anchor.
