Metallics TS506SS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use a stainless wedge anchor like the TS506SS outdoors or in a wet area?
Stainless is the reason to pick the TS506SS over a plain zinc-plated wedge anchor. Exterior slabs, parking structures, pool decks, wash-down areas, and coastal work all chew through zinc plating; stainless holds up. If the anchor is going into dry interior concrete, a carbon steel wedge anchor of the same 5/8 x 6 size does the same mechanical job.
2) How much of a 6 inch wedge anchor actually goes into the concrete?
With a 6 inch overall length, the embedment you get is 6 inches minus the thickness of whatever you are fastening plus the nut and washer. So a 5/8 x 6 anchor suits thicker fixtures, base plates, heavy strut racks, equipment rails, where a shorter 5/8 anchor would not leave enough thread above the surface. The 5/8 inch diameter is the drill size, and you need to drill deeper than the embedment so the hole can take dust and the anchor can be set fully.
3) Is a wedge anchor the right choice, or should I use a sleeve anchor or epoxy?
A wedge anchor like the 5/8 x 6 TS506SS is for solid, poured concrete only, and it is the standard pick for structural base plates, equipment anchoring, and heavy conduit or strut supports. It does not work in block, brick, or hollow base material, use a sleeve anchor there. For anchoring close to a slab edge, into cracked concrete, or where you cannot tolerate the expansion force, adhesive anchoring with threaded rod is the alternative.
4) Does the TS506SS anchor come with a nut and washer?
Wedge anchors are supplied as a complete assembly, the threaded stud with the expansion clip, plus the nut and washer already on it. You tighten the nut to set the anchor. Nothing else is needed on the anchor itself, though you will need a 5/8 inch carbide bit and a hammer drill to make the hole.
5) How many anchors are in a box of Metallics TS506SS?
25 anchors per box, and the box is the selling unit. For MRO stock or a repeat equipment-mounting job that is one box per 25 anchor points, so count your base plates and hole patterns before ordering, a four-hole plate uses four anchors.
6) Will stainless wedge anchors cause a problem with galvanized strut or aluminum I am bolting down?
Pairing a stainless 5/8 x 6 anchor with galvanized channel or aluminum puts two dissimilar metals in contact, and in a wet or exterior location that can drive galvanic corrosion of the less noble metal. Indoors and dry it is a non-issue. Where the connection stays wet, isolate the surfaces or match the fixture material to the anchor.
