Metallics TS512SS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use a 5/8 x 12 wedge anchor in block or brick instead of concrete?
Wedge anchors like the TS512SS are for solid poured concrete only. The sleeve expands by wedging against the side of a drilled hole, which needs the compressive strength of solid concrete; in hollow block or brick it crushes the web and never develops hold. For block, use a screen tube with epoxy or a sleeve anchor instead.
2) What hole size and tools do I need to set a Metallics TS512SS anchor?
Drill with a 5/8 inch carbide hammer-drill bit, matching the anchor diameter, and blow or vacuum the dust out before setting. A 12 inch anchor needs a long bit and enough slab or wall depth behind the fixture. Tighten with a wrench on the nut until the wedge expands; nut and washer come on the anchor, nothing else is supplied.
3) How many anchors come in a box of Metallics TS512SS?
Five anchors per box. The TS512SS 5/8 x 12 stainless wedge anchor is packed as a box quantity of 5, so a job needing twelve anchor points takes three boxes.
4) Are stainless wedge anchors worth it over zinc-plated for outdoor concrete work?
Yes, where moisture or washdown is in play. The TS512SS is stainless, so it holds up on exterior slabs, parking structures, pool decks, coastal sites and food-service floors where a zinc-plated carbon steel wedge anchor will rust at the collar and bleed stain onto the concrete. For dry interior anchoring, plated carbon steel is the usual choice and stainless is overkill.
5) Is a 12 inch wedge anchor removable if I need to take the equipment back off?
Not really. Once a wedge anchor like the 5/8 x 12 TS512SS is set, the clip grips the hole and the anchor cannot be backed out; you can only remove the nut and washer and cut or drive the stud below the surface. If you expect to unbolt and relocate the fixture, a threaded insert or an epoxy-set rod gives you a reusable anchor point.
6) Is the Metallics TS512SS the right anchor for mounting electrical equipment to a concrete wall?
It is sold as electrical-department anchoring hardware, and a 5/8 inch stainless wedge anchor suits heavy mounting work: transformers, large enclosures, strut racks, generator and pad-mounted gear. The 12 inch length is for thick grout, topping, or standoff conditions. For small panels and conduit strap work, a much shorter and smaller-diameter anchor is the normal pick.
