Arrow AM11 BD 26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Arrow AM11 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
Yes on both counts. The AM11 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors as standard and uses a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the normal commercial mortise backset. The armored front measures 8 x 1-1/4 x 3/32 inches and handles flat doors as well as doors beveled 1/8 inch in 2 inches, so a standard beveled commercial door edge is covered without any modification.
2) What does the apartment / front door function on the Arrow AM11 actually do?
It is the classic entry-door setup for multi-family: key outside operates the latch, inside knob always retracts the latch for free egress, and there is a separate deadbolt thrown by key outside and turnpiece inside. The deadbolt is one-piece stainless with a 1 inch throw, and the latchbolt carries an anti-friction insert with a 3/4 inch throw plus an auxiliary latch that deadlocks the latchbolt against carding. That is the combination a property manager wants on a unit entry door.
3) Do I have to order the Arrow AM11 handed, or can I flip it on the job?
Order it however it comes and re-hand it in the field. The AM11 is a handed lock that reverses without opening the lock case, so one part covers a left-hand and a right-hand opening. For a contractor carrying stock across a building of mixed swings, that means one SKU rather than two.
4) Which cylinder option should I pick on the Arrow AM11 mortise lock?
Four choices, and the right one depends on your keying program. 6-pin conventional is the straight answer if you have no existing IC system. 6-pin or 7-pin IC comes less core, so it takes your own Arrow interchangeable cores (Pointe, Choice Base, Plus and Flex are the IC families supported). Less cylinder ships with no cylinder at all, for a locksmith supplying their own. Note that the IC and less-cylinder versions arrive without a core, so plan the cores into the order.
5) Can I get a batch of Arrow AM11 locks keyed alike for one building?
Yes. Keying is a required selection at order: keyed different is the standard, keyed alike is there for running several doors on one key, and there is a none option that goes with the less-cylinder and IC less-core versions. A key code field is available if you are matching an existing system. Beyond that the AM Series supports master keying, construction master keying, visual key control and concealed key control, so a property manager can put unit keys under a building master. Two nickel silver keys come standard.
6) Will the Arrow AM11 drop into an existing mortise pocket and strike prep?
The lock case is 5-7/8 x 4 x 15/16 inches and the AM Series uses one standardized case size across functions, so a pocket cut for another AM function takes this one. Spacing is 3-5/8 inch center to center from hub to cylinder and 2-7/16 inch hub to turnpiece, which is what decides whether the existing face holes line up, so measure those two before committing. The strike is an ANSI straight lip, 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches with 1-1/8 inch lip to center, and against a 3/4 inch latch throw and 1 inch deadbolt throw it needs a standard ANSI frame cutout.
7) Should I use a mortise lock like the Arrow AM11 or a cylindrical lock with a separate deadbolt on an apartment entry?
A mortise like the AM11 puts the latch and the 1 inch deadbolt in one steel case inside the door edge, one prep, one trim set, and both bolts land in a single 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike. Two separate devices mean two bores, two strikes and two keyways to keep in step. The trade-off is the prep itself: mortising a door pocket 5-7/8 x 4 x 15/16 inches is not something you retrofit into a door already bored for a cylindrical lock without a new door or a repair kit. If the doors are already bored, a cylindrical lockset plus a deadbolt is the simpler path; if you are specifying new doors for a school, hospital or apartment building, the mortise is the heavier-duty answer.
8) What trim comes on the Arrow AM11, and will it match knobs already on my other doors?
This configuration is the B design knob on a D rose, in six finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. Every cylinder option is offered in all six, so finish and keying are independent choices. The rose trim is self-aligning, which takes the bind out of setting the trim square on installation. If your other openings run levers or escutcheon trim rather than knob and rose, this is not the matching part, look for the AM Series in the lever design and escutcheon you already have.
9) Will the Arrow AM11 latch reliably against a slightly out-of-plumb apartment door?
The two-piece latchbolt carries an anti-friction insert, which is what lets the latch ride a misaligned strike lip instead of binding, and the throw is 3/4 inch so there is real engagement depth once it drops. Behind it, the auxiliary latchbolt gives 9/16 inch effective throw and provides 3/8 inch of deadlocking against the latch, so a door that is pushed against still resists a shim attack. The strike is ANSI straight lip standard, and optional strikes, longer lips and an ANSI wrought strike box are available if the frame return needs it.
10) Is the Arrow AM11 heavy enough for a high-traffic commercial opening?
It is a commercial-duty lock, not a residential one. The case is heavy gauge steel with a zinc dichromate finish for corrosion resistance, the armored front is heavy gauge steel, the latchbolt is two-piece stainless with an anti-friction insert, and the deadbolt is one-piece stainless. Arrow builds the AM Series for heavy duty use in schools, hospitals and commercial buildings where security and low maintenance matter. Faceplate and strike are wrought brass, bronze or stainless depending on finish.
