Arrow AM13 TA 3 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Arrow AM13 apartment/front door function actually do when someone turns the knob or key?
The AM13 is the apartment/front door function: a single cylinder mortise lock with a deadbolt. The outside knob is locked or unlocked by the key, and the deadbolt is thrown and retracted by the inside turnpiece. Inside knob is always free for egress. It is the standard setup for apartment entry doors and unit front doors where the tenant wants a separate deadbolt throw from the inside.
2) Will the Arrow AM13 mortise lock fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The AM13 is built for 1-3/4 inch doors, which is the standard commercial thickness. A 1-3/8 inch door, common on older interior openings, is too thin for this lock case and trim. You would need a different lock for that opening.
3) What backset does the Arrow AM13 mortise lock use, and will it line up with an existing mortise pocket?
Backset is 2-3/4 inches, and the lock case measures 5-7/8 x 4 x 15/16 inches, with an 8 x 1-1/4 inch armored front. Arrow uses one standardized case size across the AM Series, so if the existing pocket was cut for an AM or BM Series mortise lock the AM13 drops straight in. On a pocket cut for another manufacturer, measure the pocket depth and the face cutout against those numbers before you commit.
4) Do I need to order the Arrow AM13 handed, or can I reverse it on site?
Order it as-is. The AM13 is handed but field reversible, and the hand can be changed without opening the lock case. That matters on a multi-unit job where you are stocking one lock for both left and right hand doors.
5) Will the Arrow AM13 latch into the strike already in my frame?
Depends on the strike prep. The latchbolt has a 3/4 inch throw and the deadbolt throws 1 inch, so the strike needs cavities deep enough for both. Arrow ships an ANSI straight lip strike, 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches with 1-1/8 inch lip to center. If your frame is cut for a standard ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike, it will take it. Optional strikes, other lip lengths and an ANSI wrought strike box are available if the frame is beveled or the jamb is deeper than standard.
6) Can the Arrow AM13 be master keyed into an apartment building's existing system?
Yes. The AM Series supports master keying, construction master keying, visual key control and concealed key control, and it accepts interchangeable core in Arrow's Pointe, Choice Base, Plus and Flex formats. Two nickel silver keys come standard. For a property manager standardizing a building, specify the keying system with the order rather than trying to sort it at the door.
7) What do the T and A in Arrow AM13 TA mean?
They are the trim designations. T is the knob design and A is the rose design, so AM13 TA is the AM13 lock with a T knob on an A rose rather than a lever or an escutcheon plate. If the rest of the building is on levers, you would want a lever trim designation instead so the openings match.
8) Is the Arrow AM13 heavy duty enough for apartment turnover and high traffic?
It is a commercial mortise lock, intended for heavy duty use in schools, hospitals and commercial buildings. The case is heavy gauge steel with a zinc dichromate finish for corrosion resistance, the armored front is heavy gauge steel, and both the latchbolt and deadbolt are stainless steel. The latchbolt is a two-piece mechanical design with an anti-friction insert, and there is an auxiliary deadlocking latch with 9/16 inch effective throw and 3/8 inch deadlocking.
9) How far apart are the cylinder and turnpiece holes for prepping the door?
Center to center from the hub to the cylinder is 3-5/8 inches, and hub to turnpiece is 2-7/16 inches. The armored front accommodates flat doors and doors beveled 1/8 inch in 2 inches. Rose trim on the AM Series is self aligning, which takes the bind out of the trim during install.
10) Should I use a mortise lock like the Arrow AM13 or a cylindrical lock with a separate deadbolt on apartment entry doors?
The AM13 puts the latch and the deadbolt in one mortise case, so you cut one pocket and prep one opening instead of boring a lockset plus a separate deadbolt above it. The tradeoff is that the door has to be mortised, which means a heavier prep and a 1-3/4 inch door. If your doors are already bored for cylindrical hardware and you do not want to re-prep, two-piece cylindrical plus deadbolt stays the easier route. For new apartment entries specified commercial, the single mortise case is the cleaner job.
11) What finish does the Arrow AM13 TA come in?
Bright brass, 605. That is the finish across the AM13 TA offering, so if you are matching existing hardware in a lobby or corridor on 605, it lines up. Faceplate and strike are wrought brass, bronze or stainless steel depending on the finish supplied.
