Arrow E50 26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Arrow E50 indicator deadbolt fit a 1-3/8 inch door, or does it need a 1-3/4?
Both work. The E50 is built for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick as standard, which covers older interior wood doors and standard commercial doors alike. Backset is adjustable between 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch, so it drops into either of the two bore positions you'll find on an existing door without ordering a specific backset. If you're standardizing across a building with mixed door thicknesses, one part number covers the range.
2) Which side shows the vacant/occupied indicator on the Arrow E50, and which side operates it?
The indicator reads on the outside of the door and the thumbturn is on the inside. Someone in a single-occupancy restroom or a changing room throws the turn and the person waiting outside sees Occupied without touching the door. It's non-keyed, so there's no cylinder and no key to issue. If you need a key override from the outside, this is the wrong function.
3) Will the Arrow E50 deadbolt latch into the strike that's already in my frame?
The deadbolt throws a full 1 inch, and the standard strike shipped with the E Series is the #346 wood frame strike, with the #345 metal frame strike available instead. The deadbolt front measures 2-1/4 x 1 inch for the 2-3/8 inch backset and 2-1/4 x 1-1/8 inch for the 2-3/4 inch backset. If the existing frame prep matches a standard deadbolt strike pocket, it drops in; if you're going into a hollow metal frame, specify the metal frame strike rather than reusing the wood one.
4) The door I'm working on is 2 inches thick. Will the Arrow E50 work?
Not as standard. The E50 covers 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The E Series does go to 2 inches, but only on the double cylinder SFIC unit, which is a different function than the non-keyed thumbturn-and-indicator E50. For a thicker door with an occupancy indicator, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL privacy lock is listed for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors.
5) What is the difference between an indicator deadbolt and a privacy lever with a status indicator?
The Arrow E50 is a non-keyed deadbolt with a thumbturn x indicator function - it throws a bolt above the latch and shows vacant or occupied on the outside, so the existing latch set stays in the door. A privacy lever with an indicator replaces the latch set instead: the Accentra AUYPL02 YPL Series is a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with a visual status indicator, and the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 privacy/bed/bath visual status lever lock. If the door already has a lever you intend to keep, the E50 is the device that adds indication; if you are replacing the lever anyway, a privacy indicator lever does both jobs in one prep.
6) What is the closest equivalent to an Arrow E50 indicator deadbolt from another manufacturer?
The Accentra D292 is the nearest match. Like the Arrow E50, it is a Grade 2 cylindrical deadbolt with a thumbturn x indicator function, and it covers the same 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range the E50 fits. The Hager 3216 is a second Grade 2 thumbturn x indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw, matching the E50's 1 inch solid steel deadbolt throw, though the 3216 is listed for 1-3/4 inch doors only. On a fleet of restroom or fitting room doors with mixed 1-3/8 inch and 1-3/4 inch leaves, the D292 is the drop-in; the 3216 suits a building standardized on 1-3/4 inch doors.
7) Which indicator deadbolt should I specify for a fire rated door?
The Hager 3216 and the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL both carry a fire rating. The 3216 is the closer functional relative to an Arrow E50 because it is a thumbturn x occupancy indicator deadbolt like the E50, fitted to 1-3/4 inch doors. The CLX3320 NVSL is a different device altogether - a Grade 1 privacy/bed/bath visual status lever lock for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, so it replaces the lever set rather than adding a deadbolt above one.
8) What replaces an indicator deadbolt on a door that is already mortise prepped?
Use a mortise deadbolt rather than a bored one. The Schlage L460 is a Grade 1 heavy duty small case mortise deadbolt with a cylinder x thumbturn and a VACANT/OCCUPIED indicator for the outside, for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Schlage L460J is the same small case mortise deadbolt in Grade 1 heavy duty with a 6-pin FSIC less core cylinder and a 5-9/16 inch by 1-1/4 inch face, also 1-3/4 inch doors, in an entrance/office function. The Arrow E50 is a bored deadbolt with a 1 inch by 2-1/4 inch faceplate and needs a cross bore, not a mortise pocket.
9) Which indicator deadbolt do I use if the restroom needs staff key access from the corridor?
Not the Arrow E50 - it is non-keyed, with a thumbturn and an indicator only. For key access add the Schlage B560, a Grade 2 medium duty single cylinder indicator deadbolt with a cylinder x thumbturn function, or the Grade 1 heavy duty Schlage B660 with the same cylinder x thumbturn arrangement. Both carry an UNLOCKED/LOCKED indicator on the inside, which is the reverse of the E50's outside vacant/occupied read; the Schlage L460 puts a VACANT/OCCUPIED indicator on the outside of the door with a cylinder x thumbturn.
10) Which side of the door does the indicator read on, and which products put it where?
The Arrow E50 shows vacant/occupied on the outside of the door, in a green/white or red/white indicator, so someone in the corridor can see the room is in use. The Schlage L460 also reads VACANT/OCCUPIED from the outside. The Schlage B560 and B660 both put an UNLOCKED/LOCKED indicator on the inside instead, and the Falcon D271 is a Grade 2 one-sided deadbolt with an occupancy indicator and thumbturn inside. If the point of the job is telling waiting occupants the room is taken, the outside reading products are the ones to specify.
11) Do I have to worry about handing when ordering the Arrow E50?
No handing to specify. All E Series functions are reversible, so the same part goes on a left hand or right hand door. That matters if you're buying a batch for a building and don't want to survey every opening before the order goes in.
12) Is the Arrow E50 strong enough for a public restroom in a commercial building?
It's a Grade 2 commercial deadlock, not a residential bolt. The bolt is solid steel with a hardened, free spinning steel pin insert to resist sawing, the outer ring spins free so a wrench can't get purchase on it, and the mounting screws are concealed. Thru-bolting is done with two 1/4 inch steel thru-bolts. For a single-occupancy public restroom or a fitting room in a retail space, that's the right duty level.
13) I need several indicator deadbolts to open with the same key for maintenance. Can the Arrow E50 be keyed alike?
Keying is a required selection on the E50: keyed different, keyed alike for multiple locks, or none if you want it supplied less cylinder. There's also a key code field if you're matching an existing system. Note the E50 itself is the non-keyed thumbturn-and-indicator function, so if key access is the actual requirement, look at a keyed indicator deadbolt like the Schlage B560 with a key cylinder outside and thumbturn inside.
14) What comes in the box with the Arrow E50, and what else do I need to order?
The lock ships with the #346 wood frame strike and two 1/4 inch steel thru-bolts. Order the #345 strike separately if the frame is metal. Since this is a bolt only with no latch, the opening also needs a passage set or push/pull for operating the door, and a drive-in deadbolt is available if the door edge isn't prepped for a faceplate.
15) Is there a lighter duty indicator deadbolt for a low traffic door?
The Cal-Royal IND84 is a Grade 3 indicator deadbolt with the same thumbturn x indicator function as the Arrow E50, which is Grade 2. Grade 3 suits low cycle openings such as a single tenant restroom or a back office; Grade 2 is the commercial duty level for shared and public restrooms.
16) Can I get one device that handles both the latch and the occupancy indicator on a public restroom?
Yes - the Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 public restroom interconnected lock with an occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt, in a storeroom/public restroom function. That combines the latching and the bolt in one interconnected unit. The Arrow E50 takes the other approach: it is a non-keyed deadbolt alone, added above whatever latch set is already hung, adjustable to a 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset and reversible for either hand.
17) Are the Emtek thumbturn privacy bolts a substitute for a commercial indicator deadbolt?
They serve a different door. The Emtek 8383 Wilshire, 8483 Watford, 8583 Square and 8683 Disk are thumbturn privacy bolts on double rosettes with an indicator, intended for use with a brass passage set, in a privacy/bed/bath function. The Arrow E50 is a commercial Grade 2 deadbolt with a 1 inch solid steel deadbolt, a hardened free spinning steel pin insert and a wrench resistant rotating outer collar. For a decorative interior door paired with a passage set, the Emtek bolts fit the aesthetic; for a public or shared opening carrying commercial traffic, the E50 is the graded device.
18) Which indicator deadbolt has an ADA compliant thumbturn?
The Cal-Royal IND90-G2 is a Grade 1 indicator deadbolt with an ADA thumbturn, in the same thumbturn x indicator function as the Arrow E50. For a facility standardizing on accessible operation at every restroom, that is the one to call out by part number.
19) What indicator colors and finishes does the Arrow E50 come in?
The indicator flag comes two ways, Green/White or Red/White, and both are offered in every finish the lock is made in: 605 Bright Brass, 606 Satin Brass, 609 Antique Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 613E Dark Oxidized Satin Bronze Equivalent, 619 Satin Nickel, 625 Bright Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome, and BSP Black Suede Powder Coat. Red/White is the more conventional choice for restrooms since red reads as occupied at a glance; green/white suits facilities that flag vacancy instead. Pick the finish to match the levers and closers already on the openings.
20) Can the Arrow E50 take our existing Best cores?
The E Series housing accepts 6 or 7 pin small format interchangeable cores and will take Best or Falcon type cores, supplied less cores when you order it that way. On the E50 specifically the function is non-keyed thumbturn and indicator, so if you're building an SFIC facility standard, that core capability belongs to the keyed functions in the series rather than to this one. Select the None keying option when you're supplying your own cores.
