1) Will the Schlage L9050 indicator mortise lock fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The L9050 as configured is a 1-3/4 inch door lock, with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a mortise case measuring 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches. If your opening is thinner or thicker, the escutcheon trim is where the range opens up: the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors. 2) What do the indicators on the Schlage L9050 actually say, and which side shows what?
Two different readouts on the two faces. Inside, next to the thumbturn, the indicator reads LOCKED or UNLOCKED so the occupant can confirm the state they just set. Outside, it reads OCCUPIED or VACANT, which is what staff or a visitor in the corridor sees. 5) Does the L9050 mortise lock need to be ordered handed?
Yes, it is a handed lock, so you need the hand of the door before you order. The strike supplied is the 10-072, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches, square corner with a box and a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your frame already has a square corner ANSI strike cutout of that size you can generally reuse the prep, but check the lip length against your frame reveal, a 1-3/16 inch lip that is too short or too long will either catch the latch or leave it unprotected.
