Schlage L9050P 03B 626 OS-OCC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage L9050 indicator mortise lock fit my door, and what prep does it need?
The L9050 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The mortise case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, the armor front is 1-1/4 x 8 inches, and it ships with the 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, square corner, box type, with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your door is already mortised for an L Series lock at that backset, the case drops in. If you need a thicker door, the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors.
2) How does the VACANT/OCCUPIED indicator work on an Entrance/Office lock that still takes a key?
The outside indicator reads VACANT or OCCUPIED based on whether the outside lever has been locked. Entrance/Office function means the latchbolt retracts by lever from either side until the outside lever is made inoperative, either by key from outside or by the inside thumbturn. Once locked, the outside lever is dead and the latch only retracts by key outside or by the inside lever, so anyone approaching the door sees OCCUPIED. Schlage's indicator is readable across a 180 degree arc, so it can be seen from along a corridor rather than only straight on.
3) Is the Schlage L9050 lock fire rated for a 3-hour door?
Yes. The L9000 mortise latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors (the exceptions in the family are the L9076 and L9077). UL/cUL listing covers A label single doors up to 4 x 10 feet and pairs up to 8 x 10 feet, and the letter F with the UL symbol on the latch front identifies the listing. It also meets ADA requirements and Buy American Act sourcing.
4) What ANSI grade and function code is the L9050 Entrance/Office mortise lock?
It is ANSI/BHMA function F04, certified to A156.13-2012 Series 1000 as Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security with a conventional cylinder. Fit it with a Schlage FSIC interchangeable core and the security rating becomes Grade 2; with an SFIC core it becomes Grade 3, while operational stays Grade 1. That distinction matters if your spec calls for Grade 1 security outright, because the interchangeable core option will not hold it.
5) Do I need to order a cylinder separately with this Schlage mortise lock?
Depends which cylinder option you pick. The P option ships with a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the C keyway, which is the standard build. The L option comes less conventional cylinder, J comes prepped for a Schlage FSIC with no core, and B comes less prep core for SFIC. If you key your own building, choose J, B or L and supply the core; otherwise take P. Keying is specified on the order as KD keyed different or KA keyed alike, and a UL437 Primus 20-500 Series cylinder can be specified where you need high security.
6) Is the L9050 handed, and what do I need to know before ordering?
Yes, it is a handed lock, so you need the hand of the door (and whether it swings in or out) before you order. Get it wrong on a mortise lock and the lever and the latch face the wrong way. Note as well that the indicator faces outside reading VACANT/OCCUPIED, so the outside of the door has to be the side you want the status visible from.
7) I need an indicator lock for a restroom, not an office. Is the L9050 the right function?
No. Entrance/Office function locks and unlocks the outside lever by key or thumbturn and is meant for offices, conference rooms and similar spaces. For a restroom you want a privacy or public restroom function: the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty privacy/bed/bath lever lock with a visual status indicator for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors and is fire rated, the Accentra AUYPL02 is a Grade 1 privacy cylindrical lock with a visual status indicator, and the Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 public restroom interconnected lock with occupancy indicator and single cylinder deadbolt.
8) Should I use an indicator mortise lock or just add an indicator deadbolt above the existing lockset?
Two different jobs. The L9050 is a single mortise lock that handles latching, keyed access and occupancy status in one case, which is what you want on a new or already mortised commercial opening and where you need Grade 1 heavy duty. If the door already has a working lockset and you only need occupancy status, an auxiliary indicator deadbolt is less work: the Hager 3216 is a Grade 2 thumbturn x indicator deadbolt with a 1 inch throw for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Arrow E50 is a non-keyed Grade 2 exit deadlock with a VACANT/OCCUPIED indicator outside. Neither of those latches the door, so they supplement rather than replace a lockset.
9) Will these levers match the Von Duprin exit devices and other openings already in my building?
Yes. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related L Series products LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT, so a corridor mixing mortise locks, exit devices and multipoint locks can carry one lever and one finish throughout. The 03 lever is offered in twelve finishes here, from 605 bright brass and 626 satin chrome through 622 matte black, 630 satin stainless and 643E aged bronze, plus A or B wrought rose and L or N escutcheon trim.
10) Does the L9050 have a deadbolt, and is the latch secure once the door is shut?
There is no deadbolt on the L9050, it is a latchbolt-only function. Security comes from the auxiliary latch, which deadlocks the latchbolt as soon as the door closes so the latch cannot be pushed back. A security blocking hub also prevents picking the lock by removing the levers. If your opening needs a true deadbolt, that is a different L Series function, not this one.
11) Is the Falcon H2171 a substitute for the Schlage L9050 on a public restroom door?
They solve the opening differently. The Falcon H2171 is a Grade 2 interconnected lock with an occupancy indicator and a single cylinder deadbolt, catalogued as a storeroom/public restroom function. The Schlage L9050 is a Grade 1 non-deadbolt mortise lock in the Entrance/Office function, where the inside lever is always free for immediate egress and the outside lever is locked by key or thumbturn. Choose by whether the specification calls for a deadbolt and interconnected trim or a single latchbolt mortise case.
12) What are the lighter-duty indicator options compared with the Schlage L9050?
The L9050 is a heavy duty Grade 1 commercial mortise lock. Lower-grade indicator hardware includes the Falcon D271, a medium duty Grade 2 deadbolt with occupancy indicator and inside thumbturn, the Accentra D292 Grade 2 cylindrical deadbolt with thumbturn and indicator for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal IND84, a Grade 3 indicator deadbolt with thumbturn x indicator function.
13) Which indicator lock should I specify for a thicker door than the Schlage L9050 covers?
The Schlage L9050 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door, though its L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch. If you want a cylindrical indicator lock rated past 1-3/4 inches, the Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL lists a 1-3/4 to 2 inch door thickness range and is fire rated.
14) What is the L9050 mortise case made of?
Cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, which is the corrosion-resistant finish Schlage uses on the concealed case. It is a commercial, heavy duty, non-electronic mechanical lock, so there is no wiring, transformer or power transfer hinge to plan for.
15) Is there a cheaper indicator option if I only need it on interior residential-style doors?
For lighter interior work where a Grade 1 commercial mortise lock is more than the opening calls for, the Emtek thumbturn privacy bolts (8383 Wilshire, 8483 Watford, 8583 Square, 8683 Disk) give a privacy bolt with double rosettes and an indicator, and are used alongside a brass passage set. The Cal-Royal IND84 is a Grade 3 indicator deadbolt with thumbturn x indicator function. None of those are mortise locks or fire rated, so they do not substitute on a rated commercial opening.
