1) Will the Schlage L9050 indicator mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset prep?
That is exactly the prep the L9050 is built for. Backset is 2-3/4 inches and the door thickness is 1-3/4 inches. The mortise pocket has to take a case measuring 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inches, with a 1-1/4 x 8 inch armor front on the edge. If your existing openings are already prepped for a standard Schlage L Series mortise case, the pocket and edge cutout carry straight over.
2) What does the Entrance/Office function on the Schlage L9050 actually do day to day?
Both levers retract the latchbolt normally until somebody locks the outside lever, either with the key outside or the thumbturn inside. Once it is locked, the outside lever is dead and entry takes the key; the inside lever still retracts the latch every time, so egress is never blocked. An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt as soon as the door closes. There is no deadbolt in this one, it is the non-deadbolt office function.
3) Does the Schlage L9050 with the VACANT/OCCUPIED indicator tell you the door is locked from outside?
The exterior indicator reads VACANT or OCCUPIED and tracks the office function, so it flips when the outside lever is locked by key or by the inside thumbturn. That is the whole point on a single-occupancy office, a lactation room, or a conference room: staff read the status in the corridor instead of trying the lever. Schlage's indicator is a 180 degree visibility type, so it reads from down the hallway, not only head-on.
4) Is the Schlage L9050 mortise lock handed, and do I have to specify hand when I order?
Handing matters here. The L9050 is a handed lock, so you need the hand of the opening (left hand, left hand reverse, right hand, right hand reverse) before the order goes in. Stand outside the door, note which edge the hinges are on and which way it swings, and that is your hand. Getting it wrong on a mortise lock is not a field fix like it is on some cylindrical locks.
5) Will the Schlage L9050 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?

6) What cylinder comes with the Schlage L9050 and can I get it less cylinder for my own keyway?
Four cylinder choices cover it. P is the conventional 6-pin cylinder in C keyway, which is the standard build. L is less conventional cylinder if you are supplying your own. J is Schlage FSIC less core, and B is SFIC less prep core, both for shops running interchangeable core. One thing to weigh: with the full mortise cylinder the lock is Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, with FSIC cores it holds Grade 1 operational but drops to Grade 2 security, and with SFIC cores it is Grade 1 operational and Grade 3 security.
7) Is the Schlage L9050 approved for a fire rated office door?
The L Series latch is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, with the exception of the L9076 and L9077 functions, and the L9050 is not one of those.
