Arrow N40 26D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Arrow N40 mortise deadbolt fit a 1-3/8 inch wood door, or is it 1-3/4 only?
Both. The N40 mortise deadbolt is built for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick as standard, so it works on older 1-3/8 inch interior and apartment doors as well as standard 1-3/4 inch commercial doors. Backset is 2-3/4 inches, and the latch faceplate measures 1 x 2-1/4 inches, so the door needs a mortise pocket and face prep to match.
2) Is the Arrow N40 a mortise deadbolt or a bored tubular deadbolt?
It's a mortise deadlock, not a bored one. The N40 case goes into a mortise pocket in the door edge rather than a 2-1/8 inch cross bore, so you cannot swap it into a hole prepped for a tubular deadbolt. If your door has a standard bored deadbolt prep, look at a cylindrical unit like the Hager 3215 or the Dexter DB1000 single cylinder instead.
3) How much bolt throw does the Arrow N40 give, and will it reach my existing strike?
The bolt is a solid brass deadbolt with a hardened steel pin and a full 1 inch (25.40mm) throw. Two security strikes ship with it, #380 for steel frames and #356 for wood frames, so in most cases you'll install the supplied strike rather than reuse what's in the jamb. If you keep an existing strike, its pocket has to be deep enough to take a 1 inch bolt.
4) I'm ordering several N40 deadbolts for one building. Can they all work off one key?
Yes. Keying is a required selection: KD keyed different is standard, or choose KA keyed alike if you want multiple locks on one key, and there's an optional key code field if you need to match an existing Arrow A keyway system. For a whole facility on interchangeable cores, order the IC version less cores and pin them into your existing Best or Falcon core system instead.
5) Can the Arrow N40 go on a fire rated door?
It is UL and cUL listed for use on A label or lesser doors, but only when used together with a rated primary latching device. The N40 is a deadbolt, not a latch, so it cannot be the only lock on the fire door.
6) We key our building on a Schlage C keyway - is the Arrow N40 or another deadbolt the better fit?
The Arrow N40 ships with a solid brass mortise cylinder in the Arrow A keyway, drilled for 6 pins and pinned to 5, and can also be ordered less cylinder to take Best or Falcon type small format interchangeable cores. If the building standard is Schlage C, the Hager 3115 Grade 2 cylinder x thumbturn, the Hager 3215 single cylinder, the Hager 3214 double cylinder, and the Hager 3118 Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a 6-pin cylinder are all supplied in the Schlage C keyway.
7) The Arrow N40 has a thumbturn inside - what should I order if the opening needs a key on both sides?
The N40 is a cylinder x thumbturn function, so it always releases from the inside without a key. For a double cylinder opening, the Hager 3214 is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick with a Schlage C keyway, the Dexter DB1000 double cylinder is Grade 1 for doors 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inches, and the Design Hardware D1 Series is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty double cylinder deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors. Confirm egress code allows a double cylinder on the opening before specifying one.
8) What is the closest mortise-case alternative to the Arrow N40 deadbolt?
The Arrow N40 is a mortise deadbolt with a cylinder on one side and a thumbturn on the other, 2-3/4 inch backset, for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick. The nearest mortise-case peers are the Dormakaba D900 small case mortise deadbolt, also a cylinder x thumbturn function, and the Dormakaba M1960 from the M1000 Series, likewise cylinder x thumbturn and supplied with no trim. Both are mortise-prepped cases rather than bored installations, so they suit the same kind of door prep as the N40.
9) The Arrow N40 accepts small format interchangeable cores - which competing deadbolts take an IC core?
The Arrow N40 can be ordered less cylinder to accept 6 or 7 pin small format interchangeable cores, including Best or Falcon type cores, or with a standard 1-1/8 inch mortise cylinder in the Arrow A keyway. Among the alternatives, the Deltana CL200LAIC is a Grade 2 single deadbolt built for an interchangeable core and supplied non-cylinder with a 2-3/4 inch backset, matching the N40 backset, and the Delaney LM Series 301702 is a Grade 1 single cylinder less core deadbolt in dull chrome US26D.
10) The Arrow N40 is UL listed for A label doors - what other deadbolts carry a fire rating for a labeled opening?
The Arrow N40 is UL and CUL listed for use on A label or lesser doors when paired with a rated primary latching device. Among the alternatives, the Hager 3115, 3118, 3215 and 3214 all carry a fire rating and cover doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick, and the Cal-Royal CRB800 is a heavy duty single cylinder deadbolt with a UL 3-hour fire rated latch. Any of these needs to be checked against the label on the specific door assembly.
11) Does the Arrow N40 deadbolt need to be ordered left hand or right hand?
No handing to specify. All N Series functions are reversible, so one part number covers left and right hand openings and the thumbturn side is set at install.
12) Arrow N40 versus a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock like the Corbin Russwin DL3011 for a commercial exterior door?
Two different door preps. The N40 is a commercial mortise deadlock with a 2-3/4 inch backset, 1 inch bolt throw and 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door range, and it suits doors already mortised or being prepped for a mortise case. The Corbin Russwin DL3011 is a cylindrical deadlock listed for 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors, so it covers thicker doors and bored prep. Pick by what the door is prepped for, not by feature list.
13) What is a lighter duty or lower cost substitute for the Arrow N40 on an interior or low traffic door?
The Arrow N40 is a commercial mortise deadbolt. Where a lighter bored deadbolt is acceptable, the Cal-Royal ED500 is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with adjustable backset for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick, the Cal-Royal LSD is a Grade 3 single cylinder deadbolt with an ADA ergonomic thumbturn over the same door thickness range, and the Cal-Royal CB160 is a Grade 2 single cylinder deadbolt with a tamper-resistant cylinder guard. All three share the N40's cylinder outside, thumbturn inside arrangement.
14) Which deadbolts look like substitutes for the Arrow N40 but will not work in the same prep?
Several deadbolts share the name but not the installation. The Codelocks CL200 and the electronic CL2200 are surface mounted deadbolts that fasten to the face of the door rather than into a mortise pocket. The Emtek 2050 and 2051 are European mortise deadbolts with an integrated roller latch, a different case and prep from the N40. The DynaLock 1300 Series is a mortise electric deadbolt requiring power and wiring, and the Dormakaba Saffire LX-D and Nova-D are RFID electronic deadbolts. The Baldwin 8BR0618001 is a deadbolt spacer, not a lock at all.
15) Which alternatives to the Arrow N40 match its 2-3/4 inch backset?
The Arrow N40 is fixed at a 2-3/4 inch backset. Among the alternatives, the Deltana CL200LA Grade 2 single deadbolt and the Deltana CL200LAIC interchangeable core version are both specified with a 2-3/4 inch backset. For a bored door where the existing hole centerline is unknown, the Cal-Royal ED500 and the Falcon D111 offer an adjustable backset, and the Brinks Raleigh E2401 and Mendocino E2402 single cylinder deadbolts use a 4 way adjustable backset.
16) What should I use instead of the Arrow N40 if the door cannot be bored or mortised on the inside face?
The Arrow N40 requires a mortise pocket in the door edge and prep on both faces for the cylinder and thumbturn. Where the inside face cannot be prepped, the Callan 205S is a Grade 3 one-sided half-bore deadbolt. Where no through-prep is wanted at all, the Codelocks CL200 is a surface mounted deadbolt with key override. These trade the N40's mortise case security for a simpler installation.
17) What finishes does the Arrow N40 deadbolt come in for matching existing hardware?
Five finishes: 605 bright brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. 626 satin chrome is the usual match for commercial satin chrome/US26D openings. The lock housing itself is heavy wrought steel with a zinc dichromate finish inside the door.
18) Is the Arrow N40 heavy enough for apartment entry doors, or should I use a residential grade deadbolt?
The N40 is classified as commercial hardware, with a wrought steel case, solid brass bolt with a hardened steel pin and security strikes for both wood and steel frames. That's the right level for multi-family and MRO entry doors. Residential-tier alternatives like the Cal-Royal ED500 or LSD are Grade 3 units for lighter traffic openings.
19) The Arrow N40 comes with both a steel frame and a wood frame strike - do the alternatives?
The Arrow N40 is supplied standard with a #380 security strike for steel frames and a #356 security strike for wood frames, so the same order covers either frame type, and all N40 functions are reversible for handing. Among the alternatives, the Cal-Royal CRB800 is described with a UL 3-hour fire rated latch and the International Door Closers DH-1821 hook bolt deadlock and DT-1851 long throw deadlatch are supplied with a flat faceplate; frame strike selection on those should be confirmed per opening.
