Arrow N42 26D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Arrow N42 mortise deadbolt fit a 1-3/8 inch door, or is it 1-3/4 only?
Both. The N42 is built for doors 1-3/8 inch through 1-3/4 inch thick, so it covers the older interior slab as well as the standard commercial 1-3/4 inch door. Backset is fixed at 2-3/4 inches, not adjustable, so measure from the door edge to the center of your existing bolt hole before ordering.
2) What is a double cylinder deadbolt and should I use one on a commercial exit door?
Double cylinder means the N42 takes a key on both sides, with no thumbturn inside. That is what you want on a door with glass beside it or in it, where someone could reach through and turn a knob. The tradeoff is egress: with no thumbturn, anyone inside needs a key to get out, which is not acceptable on most required exit doors. If the opening is an exit, order a cylinder x thumbturn version instead, such as the Hager 3215 or the Dexter DB2000 single cylinder.
3) Is the Arrow N42 a mortise deadbolt or a tubular one, and what prep does my door need?
Mortise. The N42 case pockets into the edge of the door rather than dropping into a round cross bore, so the door needs a mortise pocket at a 2-3/4 inch backset and a faceplate mortise of 1 inch by 2-1/4 inches. If your door is already bored for a tubular deadbolt, this is not a drop-in swap. A tubular deadbolt like the Dexter DB2000 or Cal-Royal CB160 is the type that goes into a bored door.
4) Does the Arrow N42 deadbolt take Best or Falcon interchangeable cores?
Yes, as an option. Ordered with the IC cylinder option the N42 accepts 6 or 7 pin small format interchangeable cores and ships less cores, and it will take Best or Falcon type cores. ASSA high security cylinders are also available for it. Ordered standard instead, it comes with a solid brass 1-1/8 inch mortise cylinder in the Arrow A keyway, drilled for 6 pins and pinned to 5, with two brass keys. If you key a building on SFIC, pick the less-cylinder option on the keying selection and stack your own cores.
5) Will the Arrow N42 deadbolt latch into my existing strike, and what strikes come with it?
The bolt is a solid brass 1 inch throw with a hardened steel pin through it, so it needs a strike pocket deep enough for a full inch of projection. You do not have to reuse the old strike: both a #380 security strike for steel frames and a #356 security strike for wood frames ship with the lock, so the frame type is covered either way.
6) Is the Arrow N42 deadbolt approved for a fire rated door?
The N42 is UL and CUL listed for use on A label or lesser doors, but only in conjunction with a rated primary latching device. A deadbolt alone does not carry the opening; the rated latch or lockset does, and the N42 goes on as auxiliary security alongside it.
7) What else could I buy instead of the Arrow N42 double cylinder deadbolt?
Depends on why the N42 does not suit. If the door is bored rather than mortised, the Dexter DB1000 double cylinder is Grade 1 for 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors and the Dexter DB2000 is the Grade 2 version for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch. The Design Hardware D1 Series double cylinder is Grade 1 extra heavy duty but 1-3/4 inch doors only, so it will not cover a 1-3/8 inch slab the way the N42 does. The Hager 3214 is a Grade 2 double cylinder on the Schlage C keyway if the building is already keyed Schlage rather than Arrow A.
8) What is the closest double cylinder mortise deadbolt to the Arrow N42 if I need a Grade 1 rated lock?
The Arrow N42 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, and it is UL and CUL listed for use on A label or lesser doors when paired with a rated primary latching device. If a written Grade 1 rating is what the spec calls out, the Design Hardware D1 Series is a Grade 1 double cylinder deadbolt rated extra heavy duty for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Dexter DB1000 is a Grade 1 double cylinder deadbolt covering 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch doors. Both are keyed on both sides like the N42; the door thickness range differs, so confirm the leaf you are working with.
9) I need a key outside and a thumbturn inside instead of key on both sides - what deadbolt should I order?
The Arrow N42 is keyed on both sides, so there is no inside thumbturn. For a cylinder by thumbturn opening, the Falcon D111 is a Grade 1 heavy duty deadbolt with cylinder by thumbturn operation, and the Hager 3215 is a Grade 2 cylinder by thumbturn deadbolt with a 1 inch throw covering 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the same thickness range the N42 fits. Egress codes in many occupancies rule out double cylinder on a required exit door, which is the usual reason for the switch.
10) Is a Dexter DB2000 double cylinder deadbolt the same thing as an Arrow N42?
They are both double cylinder deadbolts, but they are not the same lock. The Arrow N42 is a mortise deadbolt - the case is mortised into the edge of the door and it takes a standard 1-1/8 inch mortise cylinder, with an option to accept 6 or 7 pin small format interchangeable cores of the Best or Falcon type. The Dexter DB2000 is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. If the door is already prepped for a mortise case, a bored deadbolt will not drop into that prep.
11) What double cylinder deadbolt works on a door thicker than 1-3/4 inches?
The Arrow N42 is built for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. For a thicker leaf, the Deltana 7312KA2 is a Grade 3 double cylinder deadbolt covering 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin DL3011 is a Grade 1 cylindrical deadlock covering 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors. Measure the leaf at the lock edge before ordering, since a case sized for a 1-3/4 inch door will not reach through a thicker one.
12) I need a Schlage C keyway deadbolt instead of the Arrow A keyway - what are my options?
The Arrow N42 comes standard with a solid brass cylinder in the Arrow A keyway, drilled for 6 pins and pinned to 5, with two brass keys. If the building is keyed to Schlage C, the Hager 3214 is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3118 is a Grade 1 classroom deadbolt with a Schlage C keyway and a 6-pin cylinder over the same thickness range.
13) Can I get several Arrow N42 deadbolts keyed alike on one key?
Keying is a required choice on the N42 and keyed alike is one of the options, so a run of units for a building can be set to a single key. Keyed different is the standard, and there is a key code field if you are matching an existing Arrow A keyway system already in the building. If you run your own SFIC program, take the less-cylinder option and core them yourself.
14) I need a keyed deadbolt for a classroom door. Is the Arrow N42 the right one?
Not usually. The N42 is a straight double cylinder deadbolt, key both sides, which does not give a teacher a way to secure the door and still exit freely. For a classroom function deadbolt look at the Falcon D111, Grade 1 heavy duty with an adjustable backset, or the Falcon D211 in Grade 2. The Hager 3118 is another Grade 1 classroom deadbolt, on the Schlage C keyway with a 6-pin cylinder.
15) Is the Arrow N42 deadbolt heavy enough for a commercial building, or is it a residential lock?
Commercial. The N42 is built on a heavy wrought steel case with a zinc dichromate finish and a solid brass 1 inch throw bolt pinned with hardened steel, which is what resists a saw attack on the bolt. The residential-style deadbolts in the same shape, the Bravura 310B Elite or Callan 200S for instance, are Grade 2 and Grade 3 tubular units for lighter traffic.
16) Which deadbolt should I use if I want to keep small format interchangeable cores but do not need a mortise prep?
The Arrow N42 accepts 6 or 7 pin small format interchangeable cores and is supplied less cores when that option is chosen, which is how facilities keep one core system across a building. If the door is not prepped for a mortise case, the Deltana CL200LAIC is a Grade 2 single cylinder interchangeable core deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset - the same backset the N42 uses - and the Delaney LM Series is a Grade 1 single cylinder less core deadbolt. Both are cylinder by thumbturn rather than keyed on both sides.
17) Is the Codelocks CL2210 electronic mortise deadbolt a drop-in alternative to the Arrow N42?
Both are mortise deadbolts, but they solve different problems. The Arrow N42 is a mechanical double cylinder deadbolt keyed on both sides, reversible for either hand, and supplied with a #380 security strike for steel frames and a #356 security strike for wood frames. The Codelocks CL2210 is an electronic mortise deadbolt, so access is by code rather than by key on both faces. If the requirement is key control across a master key system, the electronic unit changes how the opening is managed rather than substituting for it.
18) Will a Baldwin Reserve deadbolt spacer work in place of an Arrow N42?
No. The Arrow N42 is a complete mortise deadlock - heavy wrought steel housing, 1 inch throw solid brass bolt with a hardened steel pin, and security strikes for steel or wood frames. The Baldwin 8BR0618001 is a deadbolt spacer, a fitting used with a double cylinder deadbolt rather than a locking device on its own. If you are searching for a double cylinder deadbolt, order the lock itself.
19) What finishes does the Arrow N42 deadbolt come in?
Five: 605 bright brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 625 bright chrome, and 626 satin chrome. For matching the rest of a commercial building, 626 satin chrome is the usual house standard. The lock case itself is heavy wrought steel with a zinc dichromate finish, which is inside the door and not part of the visible trim choice.
20) What is a lighter duty double cylinder deadbolt for a residential grade opening?
The Arrow N42 is a commercial mortise deadbolt. Where the opening does not call for a mortise case, the Callan Model 210S is a Grade 3 double cylinder deadbolt, the Delaney LU Series is a Grade 2 double cylinder deadbolt in stainless steel US32D, and the Baldwin Estates 8011 is a contemporary 1-5/8 inch double cylinder deadbolt. All keep the key on both sides that the N42 provides, in trim styles aimed at residential and light commercial doors.
21) What double cylinder deadbolt has a contemporary trim look for a storefront style entry?
The Arrow N42 is a commercial mortise deadbolt in five finishes - 605 bright brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. Where the design calls for contemporary trim, the Baldwin Reserve double cylinder contemporary round and contemporary square deadbolts are both double cylinder, as is the Emtek 8323 Modern Disc deadbolt in brass. Those change the exposed trim shape while keeping key operation on both faces.
