Arrow RL02-SR-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Arrow RL02 privacy lever fit a 1-3/8 inch apartment bedroom door?
Yes. The RL02 privacy leverset fits doors from 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches, which covers both older interior doors and standard commercial leaf thickness. It needs a standard 2-1/8 inch cross bore through the door and comes with wood and machine screws plus removable thru-bolts, so it goes into a normal bored prep without any special drilling.
2) Do I have to specify a hand when ordering the Arrow RL02 lever lock?
No handing to specify. The RL02 is non-handed, so the same lock works on a left or right hand door and one part number covers every opening in the building. That is the practical reason to stock it across a multi-family property instead of splitting your inventory by hand.
3) Will the Arrow RL02 latch work with the strike already in my door frame?
Depends which backset your door was bored for. The RL02 ships standard with the R73 springlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset and the R62 ASA strike, 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inches, and a 2-3/8 inch backset latch is also offered. The latchbolt throws 1/2 inch. If your frame already has a 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike prep, the standard strike drops straight in; frames prepped for a 2-3/4 inch T strike or a 2-1/4 inch full lip strike are also covered by the RL Series strike options. Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore first, 2-3/8 or 2-3/4, and order the latch to match.
4) How does the privacy function on the Arrow RL02 unlock in an emergency?
The inside turnbutton locks the outside lever, and the lever on either side otherwise retracts the latchbolt. From the corridor side it is released by rotating the button or by using an emergency tool through the outside trim. There is no key and no cylinder on the RL02, which is exactly what you want on a bedroom or bathroom door where staff still need access.
5) Can I use an Arrow RL02 to replace a residential privacy knob or lever in an apartment?
Usually yes, and it is the common upgrade. The RL02 goes into the standard 2-1/8 inch bore with a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset that residential locks already use, and fits the same 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door range as a Grade 3 residential privacy set like the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton. What you gain is the Grade 2 commercial rating and removable thru-bolts. Check the existing rose size, since the RL rose is 3-3/8 inches across.
6) The door does not need to lock at all - what do I order instead of the Arrow RL02?
For a hall, closet or corridor door that only needs latching, a passage lever is the right function. The Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 cylindrical passage lever with a non-handed design, and the Accentra 5301LN Augusta is a Grade 2 cylindrical passage lever in the 5300 Series. The Arrow RL02 is the privacy version, where the inside turnbutton locks the outside lever and an outside tool releases it - if nobody needs to secure the room from inside, that mechanism is not doing any work.
7) My door is 2 inches thick - the Arrow RL02 will not fit, so what lever do I use?
The RL02 is built for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. On heavier leaves, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 non-keyed passage cylindrical lock rated 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch with a fire rating, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage/closet cylindrical lever for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, also fire rated. Both are passage function rather than privacy, so they latch without locking. For a thicker door that still needs privacy, the Hager 2540 Withnell privacy lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch.
8) What is the closest Grade 2 privacy lever from another brand to the Arrow RL02?
The Hager 2540 with the Withnell lever is the nearest Grade 2 cylindrical privacy lever in the set. Both are Grade 2 cylindrical bored locks with a lever handle. The RL02 fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, while the Hager 2540 covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, so the Hager reaches thicker doors if a few of the openings on the job are heavier than the rest. The RL02 carries an ANSI/BHMA F76A privacy function operated by an inside turnbutton with outside emergency tool release.
9) What privacy lever should I use on a residential-grade bedroom or bath door instead of the Arrow RL02?
The Kwikset 300BRNL Breton privacy lever set is a Grade 3 privacy lock covering doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Arrow RL02 is a Grade 2 commercial privacy lever over the same 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door range. For a single-family bedroom or bath the Grade 3 Kwikset is built to residential duty; for multi-family corridors and apartment interiors where the same bath door is cycled by successive tenants, the Grade 2 RL02 is the commercial-rated option.
10) The bathroom door in the lobby needs a key on the outside - is the Arrow RL02 the wrong lock?
Yes, for that opening. The RL02 is non-keyed - it is a privacy lock with no cylinder, released from outside only with an emergency tool. For a public toilet or staff restroom that has to be keyed or held secure, look at a keyed function instead: the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt over 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 entry/office cylindrical lever if the room should be lockable but openable by anyone inside without a key.
11) What ANSI function number is the Arrow RL02 privacy lever?
F76A, at ANSI/BHMA Grade 2. That is the bed and bath privacy function, so if a spec or a facility standard calls for an F76 privacy lockset the RL02 answers it. Grade 2 is the medium duty commercial tier, which is where multi-family and light commercial interior doors normally land.
12) How far does the Arrow RL lever stick out from the door, and how big is the rose?
Total projection off the door face is 2-1/2 inches. The levers are pressure cast zinc, 4-3/4 inches long, on a wrought brass rose 3-3/8 inches in diameter. Worth checking against the existing rose diameter if you are replacing an older lock, since a smaller rose can leave an unfinished ring on a painted or stained door.
13) I need a privacy lever for a bathroom but the door gets heavy public traffic. Is a Grade 2 lock enough?
The RL02 is Grade 2, built for multi-family and light commercial interior use. On a high-traffic public restroom or an institutional corridor, step up a grade. The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever, and the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical, though both of those are passage function rather than privacy. If Grade 2 privacy is what the spec allows, the Hager 2540 with the Withnell lever is the cross-brand alternative in that class.
14) How wide is the latch faceplate on the Arrow RL02, and will it match my existing mortise for the latch?
The faceplate is 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inches, which is the 2-3/4 inch backset latch front. The 2-3/8 inch backset version uses a 1 by 2-1/4 inch front. If your door edge is already mortised for a 1 inch wide front, the 2-3/4 backset latch will need the mortise widened by an eighth; matching the backset to what is there avoids that entirely.
15) Does the Arrow RL02 privacy lever come with a key or cylinder?
No cylinder and no keys. The RL02 is the non-keyed privacy function, so there is nothing to key and nothing to add to a master key system. If you need this door on a keyway, you want a keyed function from the RL Series instead, not this model.
16) Is a dummy lever the same thing as the Arrow RL02 privacy lever?
No. A dummy lever is fixed trim with no latch and no locking mechanism - it is pulled, not turned. The BEST 7KC Series 1DT is a Grade 2 non-keyed single dummy trim cylindrical lever, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 single dummy cylindrical lever in the 5400 Series. The Arrow RL02 is a working privacy lock: the latchbolt is operated by the lever on either side except when the inside turnbutton locks the outside, and it ships with an R73 springlatch and R62 ASA strike. Order a dummy only for the inactive leaf of a pair or a false door.
17) Is the Master Lock RL Series the same as the Arrow RL Series?
No - the RL designation is shared but the products are different. The Master Lock BC Series RL is a Grade 3 return style keyed entry lockset. The Arrow RL02 is a Grade 2 non-keyed privacy lock in the Arrow RL Series with the F76A bed/bath function. One is keyed entry at Grade 3, the other is a non-keyed privacy at Grade 2, so a part number search on RL alone will pull both. Confirm the brand and the function before ordering.
18) What is the difference between the Arrow RL02 and a Baldwin Estate 5103 privacy lever?
Both are privacy/bed/bath levers, so both lock from inside a bedroom or bath. The Baldwin Estate 5103 privacy lever comes with the 5048 rose and is a decorative residential-style set, offered alongside matching passage and left- and right-hand half dummy versions in the same 5103 pattern so a whole floor can be trimmed to match. The Arrow RL02 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical lever, non-handed, and comes with Broadway or Sierra lever styles in bright brass, satin brass, satin bronze, oil-rubbed bronze, bright chrome and satin chrome.
19) I need a keyless code entry lever instead of a turnbutton privacy lock - what are the options?
For code entry rather than a thumbturn, the Lockey 2835 is a mechanical pushbutton keyless lever lock with passage function and ADA compliance for doors 1 3/16 inch to 2 inch, and the 2835DC is the double combination version over the same range. The Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with passage function for 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the 1150S adds an adjustable backset. The Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock. The Arrow RL02 is a mechanical privacy lock with no code and no cylinder, locked by an inside turnbutton.
20) Which lever holds up better on a high-traffic door than a Grade 2 privacy lock?
Where the cycle count justifies stepping up, the Falcon T101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical passage lever with pressure release technology in the T Series, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed passage lock, and the Design Hardware X75 is a Grade 1 passage lever lockset with a flat lever for 1-3/4 inch doors. Those are all passage function - they latch but do not lock. The Arrow RL02 is a Grade 2 privacy lock built for multi-family and light commercial openings, so the comparison only matters on a door that actually sees heavy traffic and does not need the bed/bath lock.
21) Which lever styles and finishes does the Arrow RL02 come in?
Two lever designs, Broadway (BRR) and Sierra (SR), each in six finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil-rubbed bronze, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. Every finish is offered on both levers, so you can match the privacy locks to the passage and entry hardware already on the floor without changing lever design.
22) Are Arrow RL Series locks corrosion resistant enough for a damp bathroom or an exterior corridor?
The chassis is cold rolled steel with a zinc dichromate finish for corrosion resistance, and the latchbolt is brass with a UL Listed guarded latchbolt on the locking functions. Roses are wrought brass and levers are pressure cast zinc. That construction handles interior bath and multi-family corridor use; it is rated commercial, not marine or fully exterior duty.
23) What Grade 3 lever is a step down from the Arrow RL02 for a light-use interior door?
The Callan Asheville is a Grade 3 passage leverset in satin nickel and the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 passage lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. Both are passage only. If the door still needs to lock from the inside, the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton is the Grade 3 privacy version at the same door thickness range, and the Arrow RL02 is the Grade 2 commercial privacy equivalent over 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch.
24) Can I use a Corbin Russwin CL33903 electrified lever where an Arrow RL02 is specified?
They serve different jobs. The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever running on 12VAC/DC for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, so it needs power to the opening and belongs on an access-controlled door. The Arrow RL02 is a mechanical, non-keyed Grade 2 privacy lock for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors with no wiring, no cylinder and an inside turnbutton. If the drawing calls for access control at that opening, the mechanical privacy lock will not satisfy it; if it is a bedroom or bath, the electrified lever adds a power run the door does not need.
