The RL Series has been enhanced to offer removable throughbolts and a wide variety of designs, finishes and functions. The RL Series cylindrical locksets are an economical value for a variety of application. Perfect for multi-family housing markets, as well as light commercial applications.

  • Construction: Cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate finish for corrosion resistance. Requires standard 2-1/8" (53.97mm) bore through door.

Arrow RL12-SR-26D-LC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Arrow RL12 storeroom lever fit a 1-3/8 inch door, or is it 1-3/4 only?
Both. The RL12 cylindrical lever lock is built for doors from 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch as standard, and it needs a standard 2-1/8 inch bore through the door with a 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset. Anything thicker than 1-3/4 inch is outside its range, so for a 2 inch door you'd want a different lock. Because it's non-handed, one lock covers both left and right hand openings.
2) What does storeroom function mean on an Arrow RL12, and is it the right lock for a mechanical or supply room?
Storeroom means the outside lever is always rigid. You get in with a key in the outside lever, and free egress from inside by turning the inside lever. There's no way to leave it unlocked, which is exactly what you want on a mechanical room, electrical closet, or supply room where the door has to stay secured every time it shuts. If you want staff to be able to hold the door unlocked during the day, storeroom is the wrong pick, look at an entrance/office function instead.
3) Will the Arrow RL12 latch into the strike already in my frame?
The RL12 uses a 1/2 inch throw deadlatch, and it ships standard with an R71 deadlatch on a 2-3/8 inch backset and an R62 ASA strike measuring 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inches. If your frame is already prepped for a 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike, which is the usual commercial hollow metal prep, it drops straight in. On older wood frames with a small lip strike, Arrow also lists a 2-3/4 inch T strike and a 2-1/4 inch full lip strike for the RL Series, so you can match what's cut into the jamb rather than re-mortising it.
4) Can I get the Arrow RL12 keyed to my existing Schlage C keys?
Yes. The RL12 comes standard with a solid brass 6 pin cylinder in the Arrow A keyway, and a CS option supplies a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway so it falls into a key system already running on Schlage C. It's a single cylinder lock, keyed outside only. Two brass keys come with it. If you're keying multiple doors the same, order keyed alike rather than the standard keyed different.
5) What's the closest alternative to the Arrow RL12 if I need a Grade 2 storeroom lever from another brand?
Two direct Grade 2 storeroom levers sit alongside it. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt covering 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, the same thickness range as the RL12. The Hager 2580 with the Withnell lever is also a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical, and it's rated for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, so it's the one to reach for if your door is thicker than 1-3/4 inch and the RL12 won't fit.
6) Can I use the Arrow RL12 on a classroom or office door where I want the lever unlocked during the day?
No. Storeroom function keeps the outside lever rigid at all times, with key access only, so there's no daytime unlocked mode. For a room that needs to be left open during business hours, an entrance/office function is the right call, such as the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway, or the Falcon B511CP6D Grade 2 entrance/office cylindrical lever. For a classroom function where the teacher locks the outside lever by key without opening the door, the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever is the one to look at.
7) Does the Arrow RL12 come in small format interchangeable core, and what do I order if my locksmith is supplying the cores?
Three cylinder routes on the RL12 besides the standard conventional cylinder: IC ships prepped for small format interchangeable core less the core, LC is a conventional housing less cylinder, and CS is a conventional cylinder in Schlage C keyway. If a locksmith or your facility is stocking its own SFIC cores, order IC and drop your cores in. Note that less-cylinder options are chosen under the keying selection, not by picking a keyed-different or keyed-alike option.
8) Is the Arrow RL12 heavy enough for an apartment building corridor, or do I need Grade 1?
The RL12 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical lock, meeting ANSI/BHMA F86 for storeroom function. That's the medium duty tier, and Arrow positions the RL Series for multi-family housing and light commercial. For apartment storage rooms, laundry rooms, and back-of-house doors it's a sensible spec. On a high-traffic entrance or an abused public opening, step up to a Grade 1 cylindrical, for example the Falcon T Series or the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series, both of which we carry as Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical levers.
9) How far does an Arrow RL12 lever stick out from the door, and will it clear a door that swings against a wall?
Total projection from the face of the door is 2-1/2 inches. The levers are pressure cast zinc, 4-3/4 inches long, on wrought brass roses 3-3/8 inches in diameter. That rose diameter matters if you're replacing a knob set, since a 3-3/8 inch rose covers a fair bit of the old trim footprint, and the 4-3/4 inch lever length is what you measure against any adjacent wall, frame return, or push plate.
10) What finishes and lever styles does the Arrow RL12 come in for matching the rest of my building?
Six finishes across the RL12: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil-rubbed bronze, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. Lever design is either Broadway or Sierra. For a property manager standardizing a building, 626 satin chrome with one lever style is the usual commercial default, and the same finish and lever run across the other RL Series functions so passage and privacy doors match the storeroom doors.
11) Do I need to order anything extra to install the Arrow RL12, or is the mounting hardware in the box?
Mounting hardware is included: wood and machine screws, plus removable thru-bolts which are standard on the RL Series. The latch and the R62 ASA strike come with it too, along with two keys. Removable thru-bolts are worth knowing about on a rental or institutional job, since you can pull and re-key or swap trim without wrestling the whole lock body out of the door.
12) Does the Arrow RL12 need to be ordered left hand or right hand?
No handing to specify. The RL12 is non-handed, so the same lock works on a left hand or right hand door and you don't need to know the swing before you order. That also means one part number covers a whole building's worth of storeroom doors regardless of which way each one swings, which cuts down what you have to keep on the shelf.
13) What size latch faceplate does the Arrow RL12 use, and will it match the mortise already cut in my door edge?
Faceplate is 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inches. That's the size Arrow uses with the 2-3/4 inch backset; the 2-3/8 inch backset latch runs a 1 by 2-1/4 inch front instead. Both are 2-1/4 inches on the long dimension, so an existing edge mortise for a standard cylindrical latch takes it, and the difference between the two is the narrow dimension only. Confirm which backset your door is bored for before picking the latch.
14) Is the Arrow RL12 latch UL Listed?
The latchbolt is UL Listed and it's a guarded latchbolt, which Arrow provides on all locking functions in the RL Series. It's brass with a 1/2 inch throw. The guarded, deadlatching design is what resists a card or shim being slipped past the bolt on a storeroom door.
15) Will the Arrow RL12 hold up outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
The chassis is cold rolled steel with a zinc dichromate finish for corrosion resistance, which is aimed at damp interior conditions like mechanical and laundry rooms rather than full weather exposure. Trim is pressure cast zinc levers on wrought brass roses. For a door taking direct rain and salt, this isn't the right spec.
16) I need matching passage and dummy levers for the non-locking doors on the same job as my Arrow RL12s. What pairs with it?
The RL Series itself runs a range of functions in the same lever designs and finishes, so the cleanest match is another RL Series lock in the same Broadway or Sierra lever and the same finish.
