1) Does the Eaton HKD3125W breaker come with lugs or do I have to order terminals separately?
The HKD3125W ships without terminals. You need to order the K-frame terminal kit or lugs separately to land conductors, so budget for that on the job before the panel goes together.
2) Is the HKD 125A breaker rated for a 480V three-phase service?
Yes. The HKD3125W is rated 600 Vac (and 250 Vdc), three-pole, with an interrupting rating of 65 kAIC at 480 Vac and 100 kAIC at 240 Vac. It works on 50/60 Hz systems, so it covers standard 480Y/277 and 240V distribution.
3) Can the trip setting on the Eaton HKD3125W be adjusted in the field?
No. This is a fixed thermal, fixed magnetic trip unit set at 125A. There is no adjustable magnetic dial and no interchangeable trip unit, so if your coordination study calls for an adjustable instantaneous setting you need a different trip style in the K-frame family.
4) What does the K-frame HKD designation mean when I'm matching an existing Eaton breaker?
HKD is the Eaton Series C K-frame designation: H for the high interrupting rating, KD for the K-frame three-pole complete breaker. To replace like for like, match the frame letter, the pole count and the amp rating, here three-pole at 125A. A breaker from a different frame (F-frame, L-frame) will not mount in the same space.
5) How much space do I need in the enclosure for this 125A Eaton K-frame breaker?
The breaker measures 5.5 inches in height, 5.5 inches in width and 4.1 inches in depth, and weighs 11.5 lb. At that weight, plan on mounting hardware rated for it and allow working clearance in front for the terminal kit you add.
6) Is the HKD3125W a complete breaker or just a frame that needs a trip unit?
It is supplied as a complete breaker, not a bare frame. The thermal-magnetic trip is built in and fixed at 125A, so the only thing you still have to source is the terminal hardware.
7) Can I use the HKD3125W on a 250 VDC application?
Yes. The breaker is rated 250 Vdc as well as 600 Vac, so it can be applied on DC systems up to 250 volts. Note the published interrupting ratings, 100 kAIC at 240 Vac and 65 kAIC at 480 Vac, are the AC values.
