B-LINE KDC3100W – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Eaton KDC3100W breaker come with lugs or terminals?
No. The KDC3100W is supplied without terminals, so the line and load lugs or terminal kits have to be ordered separately to match your conductor size and material. Plan on that before the install day, because the breaker cannot be wired as shipped.
2) Is the interrupting rating on this 100A K-frame breaker high enough for a 480V service?
The KDC is the high-interrupting version of the K-frame: 200 kAIC at 240 Vac and 100 kAIC at 480 Vac. On a 480 Vac system you have 100 kA of fault withstand, which covers most service entrance and large industrial switchboard applications without needing series-rated or current-limiting backup.
3) Can I use this breaker on a 600 volt three-phase system?
Yes. The three-pole KDC3100W is rated 600 Vac and 250 Vdc, at 50/60 Hz, so it works on 208, 240, 480 and 600 volt three-phase AC as well as DC applications up to 250 volts. Note the published interrupting values are given at 240 and 480 Vac.
4) Is the trip setting on the KDC3100W adjustable?
No, it is a fixed thermal, fixed magnetic trip unit at 100A. There is no adjustable instantaneous dial and no interchangeable trip, so the only way to change the trip point is to change the breaker. If your coordination study calls for an adjustable magnetic setting, you need a different trip unit variant of the K-frame.
5) Will a K-frame Series C breaker this size fit in my existing enclosure?
Check against 10.13 inches height, 5.5 inches width and 4.31 inches depth, and allow for the terminal kit you add on top of that since none is included. It weighs 11.5 lb, so it is a two-hand lift into a panel but does not need rigging.
6) Is this a complete breaker or just a frame that needs a trip unit added?
It ships as a complete breaker, meaning the K-frame and its 100A fixed thermal-magnetic trip are one assembled unit. You are not buying a bare frame and selecting a separate rating plug. The only thing left to specify is the terminal hardware.
7) Is the Eaton KDC3100W UL Listed for commercial and institutional work?
It carries a UL Listed marking, which is what an AHJ or a facilities spec normally requires for a molded case breaker in commercial, healthcare or education installations. Exact part to reference on the submittal is KDC3100W, Eaton Series C.
8) What is the difference between a KD and a KDC K-frame breaker?
The C in KDC denotes the higher interrupting capacity build of the K-frame. This one delivers 200 kAIC at 240 Vac and 100 kAIC at 480 Vac. Standard-interrupting K-frames of the same 100A rating and the same three-pole, 600 Vac configuration will carry lower kAIC figures, so the choice comes down to the available fault current at your point of installation, not the load.
9) Can I use this breaker on a DC application like a solar or battery system?
It is rated 250 Vdc, so DC use is within the ratings up to that voltage at 100A across three poles. The published interrupting figures are the AC ones, so for a DC system confirm the fault current against the DC withstand on Eaton's data for the K-frame before you commit it to a battery bus.
