Baldwin BAL-R011.003.PS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What exactly comes in a Baldwin Estate R011 passage rose order, and what do I still need to buy?
An R011 passage rose order ships with either one or two roses depending on the type you pick, the matching backplate, and the retainer or retainers that hold the rose to the door. Knobs or levers, the latch, and any adaptors are separate purchases. So if you are building a complete opening, plan on ordering the trim, the knob or lever, and the latch as three separate lines.
2) Should I order the R011 rose as a Pair or a Half Pair?
Pair covers both faces of one door, which is what you want for a standard passage door with a knob or lever on each side. Half Pair is a single rose with its backplate and retainer, for one face only. Locksmiths and property managers use Half Pair to replace a damaged rose on a door where the other side is still good, or to trim the interior face of a sectional entry set.
3) Is the Baldwin Estate R011 rose rated for commercial door traffic?
It is a residential product in Baldwin's Estate Series. For apartment interiors, condo units, model homes, and high-end single-family work it is the right class of trim. For a commercial corridor or an institutional opening that needs a graded cylindrical or mortise lock, specify commercial lockset trim instead, not Estate decorative roses.
4) Does a passage rose mean there is no lock at all on the door?
Correct. The R011 is specified as a passage function, meaning the knob or lever turns freely from both sides with no locking and no keyway. Use it on hallways, closets, pantries, and laundry doors. For a bath or bedroom that needs to lock from the inside, you need the privacy version of the rose with a turn button and emergency release, not the passage one.
5) I need matching roses on a whole run of doors with different functions. Does the R011 style cover that?
Yes. The R011 rose design is offered as part of complete Passage, Privacy, Full Dummy and Half Dummy sets, so a builder or property manager can run the same rose profile across hall doors, bath doors, and non-operating closet or French door leaves. Order the passage version here for the free-swinging doors and the matching privacy or dummy versions for the rest.
6) Can the Baldwin R011 rose be used with a mortise entry set, or only tubular hardware?
Both. The R011 passage rose is used to build tubular passage trim and it also works as part of a Baldwin mortise sectional entry set. Which way you go decides the latch and adaptor you order alongside it, since neither is included with the rose.
7) How far does the Baldwin R011 rose stand off the face of the door?
Projection is 0.25 inch, so the rose sits nearly flush to the door face. That low profile matters on doors with narrow stops or where a door swings tight against adjacent casing or another leaf, and it keeps the knob or lever shank length the deciding factor rather than the trim.
8) Is the R011 passage rose actually solid brass, or plated zinc?
The substrate is brass. On the Lifetime Satin Nickel finish, Baldwin nickel-plates that solid brass to get the silver tone with the weight of brass behind it, and that PVD finish is described as extremely durable. Brass under the plating is why these hold up better on high-traffic residential doors than die-cast trim.
9) What finishes does the Baldwin R011 rose come in if I need it to match the rest of my hardware?
Fourteen finishes: 003 Polished Brass, 031 Non-Lacquered Brass, 033 Vintage Brass, 044 Satin Brass, 050 Satin Brass and Black, 055 Polished Nickel, 056 Satin Nickel, 060 Satin Brass and Brown, 076 Graphite Nickel, 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 112/11P Venetian Bronze, 190 Satin Black, 260 Polished Chrome, and 402 Distressed Oil Rubbed Bronze. Every one of those is offered in both Pair and Half Pair, so a single-face replacement can match a door you already have. Note that 031 Non-Lacquered Brass is a living finish and will patina over time rather than staying bright.
