Baldwin BAL-R012.260.PV – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What exactly comes in a Baldwin Estate R012 privacy rose order, and what do I still need to buy?
An R012 privacy rose order gets you either one rose or two (depending on whether you pick Half Pair or Pair), the matching backplate, and the retainer or retainers that hold the rose to the door. Knobs or levers, the latch, and any adaptors are separate purchases. So a working privacy set is at least three line items: roses, knobs/levers, and the tubular privacy latch.
2) Should I order the R012 rose as a Pair or a Half Pair?
Order the Pair when you are trimming both faces of a door, which is what a normal privacy bath or bedroom door needs. The Half Pair is a single rose, useful when you only need to replace one damaged or mismatched side, or when you are building up one face of an opening. Every finish is offered both ways.
3) Can I use the R012 privacy rose on a commercial office or apartment corridor door?
No. The R012 is an Estate Series residential rosette for tubular privacy sets, not commercial-grade door trim. For corridor and office openings in a multi-family or commercial building, use commercial cylindrical or mortise lock trim instead. The R012 belongs on interior residential doors: bedrooms, baths, powder rooms.
4) Is the Baldwin R012 rose a lock, or just the decorative trim?
It is trim. The R012 is the rosette that sits between the knob or lever and the door face, plus its backplate and retainer. It carries no latching mechanism of its own; the privacy function comes from the tubular privacy latch and the turn button on the knob or lever you pair with it.
5) How far does the Baldwin Estate R012 rose stand off the door face?
Projection is 0.25 inch, so the rose sits nearly flush against the door. That matters if you are running a door into a tight jamb, behind a stop, or next to casing with little clearance, and it keeps the overall knob projection down once the knob is stacked on top.
6) Which finishes does the Baldwin Estate R012 privacy rose come in so I can match the rest of my doors?
Fourteen finishes: 003 Polished Brass, 031 Non-Lacquered Brass, 033 Vintage Brass, 044 Satin Brass, 050 Satin Brass and Black, 055 Polished Nickel, 056 Satin Nickel, 060 Satin Brass and Brown, 076 Graphite Nickel, 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 112/11P Venetian Bronze, 190 Satin Black, 260 Polished Chrome, and 402 Distressed Oil Rubbed Bronze. All fourteen are available as a Pair or a Half Pair, so you can match an existing opening exactly when you replace one side.
7) I have a closet or a fixed door that does not need to latch. Can I still use the R012 rose?
Yes, but not this privacy version. The R012 rose style is offered as part of complete Passage, Privacy, Full Dummy and Half Dummy sets. A closet or pantry door that only needs to push shut takes the passage configuration; a fixed or inactive door takes a dummy. The privacy rose is the one to order when the door needs a turn button.
8) Is 031 Non-Lacquered Brass going to stay bright like 003 Polished Brass?
No. Non-lacquered brass (031) is a living finish with no clear coat, so it patinas and darkens with handling and time. 003 Polished Brass is lacquered and holds its bright tone. If you are trimming out several doors in a house and want them to look identical years from now, pick one of the plated or PVD options such as 056 Satin Nickel, 055 Polished Nickel, or 260 Polished Chrome rather than 031.
9) What is the Baldwin R012 rose made of?
Solid brass is the substrate. That is why the plated and PVD finishes hold up the way they do, and it gives the rose real weight in the hand compared with a stamped steel or zinc rosette.
10) What is the Satin Nickel finish on the Baldwin R012 actually built from?
Lifetime Satin Nickel (056) is nickel plating over solid brass, finished as a matte PVD. You get the silver tone with the mass of a brass rose underneath, and PVD holds up well to daily handling on a bath or bedroom door.
