Baldwin Estate R055 Arch Rose Privacy

The R055 arch rose is trim only. It's the decorative plate that sits against the door face around the knob or lever spindle, not the latch and not the locking mechanism. If you're replacing a worn or wrong-finish rose on an existing Baldwin Estate opening, this is the part. If the door has no bore or no working latch, you need a complete privacy set instead, and the rose comes as part of it.

Both ways are sold. The Pair covers a door from both sides, which is what you want on a bedroom or bath where the trim shows inside and out. The Half Pair is a single rose, for when one side got damaged or refinished and the other is fine. Every finish in the R055 range is offered in both Pair and Half Pair, so you can match an existing door without buying a set you don't need.

Privacy is the bed and bath function: it locks from the inside with a turn button or thumbturn and has an emergency release outside, no key. The R055 arch rose is machined for that privacy function. On a passage door (a closet or hall door that never locks) or a keyed entry door, the rose has different prep and this one is the wrong trim. Match the rose to the function the door actually has.

A quarter inch of projection, so it sits close and flat to the door. That matters where a door swings hard against a wall stop, or where a passing door in a tight jamb clears by very little. It also keeps the profile low on a slab door with an applied moulding running near the bore.

Brass is the substrate. The plated finishes are brass underneath, so you get the heft of brass in the hand rather than a light zinc casting, and the plating is carried on a base that machines cleanly at the spindle hole. That's the substantive difference between the Estate line and lighter residential trim.

Fourteen finishes: 003 Polished Brass, 031 Non-Lacquered Brass, 033 Vintage Brass, 044 Satin Brass, 050 Satin Brass and Black, 055 Polished Nickel, 056 Satin Nickel, 060 Satin Brass and Brown, 076 Graphite Nickel, 102 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 112 (11P) Venetian Bronze, 190 Satin Black, 260 Polished Chrome, and 402 Distressed Oil Rubbed Bronze. Those are Baldwin's standard finish codes, so if the hardware already on your other doors carries a code stamped or recorded on the invoice, order the same number and it will match across the house.

It will, and that's the point of ordering it. Non-lacquered brass has no clear coat, so it darkens and patinas with handling and air. Polished Brass (003) is lacquered and holds its bright look. If you're mixing a new rose into a door where the rest of the trim is already aged living brass, 031 blends in over time; 003 will always read newer next to it.

It's a residential product. For single family, condo interiors, and unit bedrooms and baths it's the right piece. For a commercial corridor or a high traffic institutional opening you want commercial grade trim on a Grade 1 or Grade 2 lock, not Estate residential trim. Property managers doing unit interiors in multi-family are fine here; the same manager doing common areas should spec commercial.

No. Order the Half Pair in your finish and you replace the single side. That's the common repair after a door strikes a wall, or when one side was cleaned with something that stripped the plating. Check the finish code on the good side first so the replacement reads the same; all fourteen R055 finishes are stocked as Half Pair.

The rose doesn't decide that. It's the trim ring around the spindle, so swapping to a lever means changing the lever, spindle and often the latch as well, and the rose only follows along in the matching finish. Order the R055 when you're keeping the mechanism and replacing or matching the plate, not as a conversion kit.
