The Bodyguard-T mounts overhead up to 108 inches (9 ft) maximum, with 78 to 96 inches (6.5 to 8 ft) recommended. If your header sits higher than 9 feet, this sensor is out of range for that opening. Mounting angle is 5 or 10 degrees on the sensor alone (5 degrees from the factory); add the Bodymount accessory and you also get a 0 degree setting for headers where the beam needs to drop straight down.
2) What power does the BEA 10BODYGUARDT sensor run on, and will it work off my door operator's accessory terminals?
Power is 12 to 24 VAC or VDC, plus or minus 10 percent, at 50 to 60 Hz, drawing up to 30 W on DC or 60 VA on AC. That is the same accessory voltage range most pedestrian automatic operators put out, so it typically runs straight off the operator's low voltage terminals with no separate supply. Presence, not activation. The Bodyguard-T's job is threshold protection: it keeps a closed door from opening and holds an open door from closing while someone is standing in the zone. It will not initiate the opening cycle for an approaching pedestrian. You still need a separate activation device, a motion sensor, push plate, or card reader, to start the door. Buyers wiring a full swing or slide package generally use both.
5) What detection technology does the Bodyguard-T use, and does it see a person standing still?
Active infrared. Unlike a microwave motion sensor, which only reacts to movement toward the door, active infrared presence detection holds on a stationary person in the threshold zone, which is exactly the case where someone gets struck by a closing door. That is the split to understand when specifying: microwave for activation, active infrared for threshold safety.
6) Can the Bodyguard-T be installed on an exterior door in a cold climate?
Operating range is -22 to 140 degrees F, which covers exterior entrances in northern winters and hot southern vestibules alike. It is also immune to electrical and radio frequency interference, so it holds up next to the operator motor and nearby transmitters. The 6-conductor cable is 48 inches (4 ft) long, so plan a junction inside the header if the controller is further than that from the sensor.
7) How do you adjust the detection zone on the BEA Bodyguard-T after it is mounted?
Field setup runs off the BEA remote control, not dip switches you have to reach up and flip. You set the detection zone and sensitivity from the floor, which matters on a 9 foot header where the alternative is a ladder every time traffic patterns change.
