1) How wide an opening will the Falcon Wide microwave sensor cover?
At a 252 inch mounting height the Falcon Wide throws a detection zone of 360 x 132 inches, so 30 feet across by 11 feet deep. That width is the reason to pick Wide over the other two: the standard Falcon covers 13 x 16 ft at 192 in and the Falcon XL covers 13 x 6.5 ft at 98.4 in. For a wide vehicle gate or a multi-lane dock apron, one Wide head covers ground that would take several standard units.
2) Should I use a microwave radar sensor or an infrared presence sensor on an industrial door?
Microwave doppler radar, which is what the 10FALCONW uses, detects motion only. It needs something moving at 2 inches per second or faster to trigger, so it is an activation device for a door or gate opening, not a presence or safety device that holds a door open for someone standing still. Use it to call the door open on approach. If you need to hold an open door because a person or vehicle is stopped in the threshold, that is a presence sensor's job and this radar head will not do it.
3) What power supply does the BEA 10FALCONW need, and can I run it off my existing door operator?
The Falcon Wide runs on 12 to 24 VAC (+/-10%) or 12 to 24 VDC, at 50 to 60 Hz, and draws under 2 watts. Most commercial door operators and gate controllers already provide a 24 V accessory output, and 2 W is a small enough load that a spare auxiliary terminal will normally carry it. It is not a line-voltage device, so do not land 120 V on it.
4) What kind of output contact does the Falcon Wide sensor give the door controller?
Output is a dry relay contact, a potential-free change-over, so you get both normally open and normally closed and you wire whichever your controller wants. Ratings are 42 VAC/VDC maximum contact voltage, 1 A resistive maximum current, and 30 W DC or 60 VA AC maximum switching power. That is fine for a controller input or a small pilot relay. Anything heavier, a motor, a horn, a contactor coil above those figures, needs an interposing relay between the sensor and the load.
5) Can I make the sensor ignore traffic leaving the door so it only opens on approach?
Yes, that is a setting on the unit. The 10FALCONW offers bidirectional, unidirectional approach, and unidirectional depart detection. Unidirectional approach is what you set on a one-way gate lane or an exit-only dock door where cross traffic or departing vehicles would otherwise keep cycling the door. Bidirectional triggers on movement either way.
6) Do I need a lift to adjust the BEA Falcon Wide after it is mounted?
No, adjustments are made by remote control. Tilt runs 0 to 180 degrees and the setup parameters are set remotely, so aiming the pattern at a 21 foot mounting height does not mean repeated ladder or lift trips. Two LEDs report back while you work: green for value indication, red for detection state and parameter indication, so you can see from the floor what the head is doing.
7) Will a BEA Falcon Wide sensor pick up a person walking, or only vehicles?
