Metallics UB026PL – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread does the Metallics UB026PL U-bolt use, and will standard 1/2-13 nuts fit it?
The UB026PL is a 1/2-13 U-bolt, 13 threads per inch, cut to ANSI/ASME B1.1. Any standard 1/2-13 UNC nut threads on. Two nuts ship with each bolt, so you don't need to source them separately.
2) Does the Metallics UB026PL U-bolt come with the plate and nuts, or do I order those separately?
Everything comes together: the U-bolt, the backing plate, and two nuts. It ships as a box of 10 sets, so one box covers ten hanging or clamping points.
3) Is the UB026PL U-bolt Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The UB026PL is flagged Buy American non-compliant and ARRA non-compliant, even though country of origin is listed as the United States. If your spec requires a Buy American certification, this part will not satisfy it.
4) What is the leg length on the UB026PL U-bolt?
Leg length is 6 inches on the 1/2-13 UB026PL. That is the threaded leg dimension, so subtract your pipe or member thickness plus plate and nut stack to see how much thread you have left to pull up.
5) What steel and plating is the Metallics UB026PL made from, and is it OK outdoors?
Steel with a zinc finish. The U-bolt itself is made to ASTM A307 and the nuts are Grade A per ASTM A563. Zinc plating handles dry indoor and sheltered locations; for constant wet exposure, coastal air, or chemical service, go to a hot-dip galvanized or stainless U-bolt instead.
6) Can I buy fewer than 10 of the Metallics UB026PL U-bolts?
No. Order minimum on the UB026PL is 10 each, sold as a box. Other sizes and quantities in the Metallics UB series are available by request if the box of 10 in this size is not what the job needs.
7) What dimensional standard do Metallics UB series U-bolts and nuts follow?
Dimensions follow ASME B18.2.2, which is the bolt and nut dimensional standard, with threads to ANSI/ASME B1.1. Nut height on the UB026PL runs 0.427 to 0.448 inch and across the flats measures 0.736 to 0.750 inch, so a standard 3/4 inch wrench or socket fits.
8) What is a U-bolt with plate and nuts used for on an electrical job versus a plain pipe strap?
A U-bolt with plate wraps a pipe or structural member and clamps it against the backing plate, with two nuts drawing the whole assembly tight. It takes more load and resists pull-out better than a single-screw one-hole strap, which only holds conduit flat against a surface. The UB026PL is a 1/2-13 size in the Metallics UB series, catalogued for electrical work and supplied in zinc-plated steel.
