Metallics JG5HC28 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread and diameter are the Metallics JG5HC28 hex bolts, and what nut do I need?
They are 3/8 in diameter with 16 threads per inch, so they mate with standard 3/8-16 nuts and tapped 3/8-16 holes. Measured shank diameter runs 0.3690 to 0.3750 in, and the threads are made to ASME B18.2.1-2012. Nuts and washers are not included, so order those separately.
2) Is a grade 5 bolt strong enough to mount a motor to machinery, or do I need grade 8?
Grade 5 is the normal choice for motor mounting and equipment anchoring, and that is exactly what these are sold for. They are medium carbon steel, heat treated, rated 105,000 psi minimum tensile and 105,000 psi minimum yield, with a hardness of Rockwell C19-30. Grade 8 only comes into it for high-shock or high-preload structural work; for bolting a motor base, pump, or compressor to a frame, grade 5 is the standard spec.
3) Can I use these zinc plated bolts outdoors or on a rooftop unit?
The finish is zinc on steel, which is a mild corrosion coating meant for dry or sheltered service. It will hold up in a mechanical room, inside a panel, or on interior strut, but on an exposed rooftop curb, near the coast, or anywhere washed down regularly the plating will eventually rust through. For those openings use hot dip galvanized or stainless instead.
4) Are Metallics JG5HC28 bolts Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The JG5HC28 grade 5 hex bolts are not Buy American compliant and are not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your contract carries a domestic sourcing clause, these will not qualify and you need a domestically produced grade 5 bolt.
5) What size wrench or socket fits these 3/8 grade 5 hex bolts?
The hex head measures 0.551 to 0.562 in across the flats, which is a 9/16 in wrench or socket. Head height is 15/64 in, so clearance under a 9/16 socket is minimal if the bolt sits in a recess.
6) How many bolts come in a jar of Metallics JG5HC28, and is that the minimum order?
Each jar holds 50 bolts, and 50 each is the order minimum, so the jar is the buying unit. Packed weight is 3116 g. The jar packaging is the difference between the JG5HC prefix and the bulk G5HC designation in the same series.
7) Are these hex bolts suitable for hanging strut and equipment in HVAC and plumbing work?
Yes, the JG5HC28 is sold for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades, so it is a standard fastener for strut, equipment bases, and hanger assemblies. Keep in mind it is a plain hex cap screw, not a strut-specific fastener, so you supply your own channel nuts or spring nuts to suit the strut you are using.
8) What steel are Metallics grade 5 hex bolts made from?
Material standard is AISI 1008 through 1026 carbon steel, heat treated to reach grade 5 properties. That lands the hardness at Rockwell C19-30, which is why they can be torqued to normal grade 5 values without the brittleness you get from higher grades. Machinable and weldable work is not what they are made for.
