1) Can I use these zinc lag bolts outdoors or in a wet location?
No. The JBLS45 lag bolt is zinc plated steel and is specified for use in wood in non-corrosive environments only. Zinc plating is a dry-location coating, so for exterior, damp, coastal or chemically aggressive locations you want hot dip galvanized or 18-8 stainless lags instead.
2) Can I use these on a federally funded job with Buy American requirements?
No. The JBLS45 lag bolt is listed as not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. For a job carrying domestic sourcing language you need a domestically manufactured lag instead.
3) Do I have to drill a pilot hole for a 3/8 lag bolt, or does it self-start?
