Burndy UNITAP Aluminum Multi-Tap Connector, Run/Tap Style

The Burndy UNITAP Aluminum Multi-Tap Connector is a mechanical run/tap connector line built with a UV-rated black aluminum body for long-term outdoor durability. This family is available in multiple configurations to match your conductor sizes and port needs, including 4-Port versions accepting copper conductors from 14 AWG to 4 AWG or up to 250 kcmil to 10 AWG, and a 3-Port version accepting 350 kcmil to 10 AWG conductors. Every connector in the UNITAP family features a double-sided (2-sided) entry design and a factory pre-installed oxide inhibitor, so installers get a low-resistance, corrosion-protected splice without a separate field application step. As a mechanical connector, the UNITAP line is intended for splicing and tapping applications where a bolted, multi-port aluminum body is preferred over a compression or insulation-piercing style connection.

Key Features

  • Multi-Port Design: Configurations offer 3 or 4 ports, allowing multiple taps or runs to be terminated at a single aluminum connector body.
  • Double-Sided Entry: 2-sided access simplifies routing and termination of conductors from either side of the connector.
  • Durable Construction: Aluminum body with a UV-rated black finish resists degradation from sunlight exposure in outdoor installations.
  • Multi-Tap Connector Type: Configured as a run/tap connector for joining a main conductor to one or more branch conductors.
  • Wide Conductor Range: Family spans 14 AWG to 4 AWG copper, 8 AWG to 4 AWG aluminum, and up to 350 kcmil depending on the configuration selected.
  • Pre-Installed Oxide Inhibitor: Oxide inhibitor is factory-applied to help maintain a low-resistance, corrosion-protected connection.
  • UNITAP™ Trade Name: Part of Burndy's UNITAP™ family of mechanical multi-tap connectors.

Why Burndy?

Burndy's UNITAP™ multi-tap connectors combine an aluminum, UV-rated black connector body with a pre-installed oxide inhibitor, reducing field prep time while supporting a reliable, corrosion-resistant connection across every configuration in the line. As part of the UNITAP™ family, these run/tap connectors are built for the demands of professional electrical splicing and tap work across copper and aluminum conductors, from 14 AWG through 350 kcmil. The double-sided, multi-port body gives installers flexibility in laying out multiple taps at one location, while the UV-rated black housing supports use in exposed, outdoor-facing installations where sunlight exposure would otherwise degrade an unprotected connector body over time.

Burndy 1PLD44 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Which Burndy UNITAP connector do I pick for a 250 kcmil main with several small branch taps?
That's the 1PLD2504, the 4-port UNITAP that takes conductors from 250 kcmil down to 10 AWG. All four ports share that same range, so you can land the 250 kcmil main and up to three smaller branches in one aluminum body. If your main is larger, the 1PLD3503 goes up to 350 kcmil but gives you only three ports. For small-conductor work only, the 1PLD44 covers 14 AWG to 4 AWG in four ports.
2) Can Burndy UNITAP multi-tap connectors be used on aluminum conductors as well as copper?
Yes. The UNITAP line is rated for stranded aluminum from 8 AWG to 4 AWG and stranded copper from 14 AWG to 4 AWG, and the oxide inhibitor is already in the ports from the factory, which is what you want when you're landing aluminum. No separate field application of compound is needed.
3) Will a UNITAP 1PLD44 handle a 1/0 copper feeder?
No. The 1PLD44 tops out at 4 AWG copper, so a 1/0 conductor won't fit the port. Step up to the 1PLD2504 (250 kcmil to 10 AWG) or the 1PLD3503 (350 kcmil to 10 AWG) for anything larger than 4 AWG.
4) Is this a compression connector or a bolted mechanical one? I don't want to buy a crimp tool.
It's a mechanical connector, set screw type, so no crimp die or hydraulic tool is involved. That's the trade-off versus a compression tap: faster to install with hand tools and re-enterable, where a compression sleeve is permanent. It is also not an insulation-piercing connector, so conductors have to be stripped before insertion.
5) Can I mount a UNITAP connector outdoors where it gets direct sun?
The body is aluminum with a UV-rated black finish, so sunlight exposure won't degrade the housing the way it would an unprotected connector. Burndy lists outdoor and wet-location electrical installations among the intended applications. It's a bare connector body, though, not an insulated cover, so normal enclosure and insulating practice for the installation still applies.
6) What does double-sided entry mean on the Burndy UNITAP, and does it help in a tight panel?
Two-sided entry means conductors can come into the block from either side rather than all from one face. In a crowded panelboard or gutter that lets you bring the main in one side and run taps out the other instead of forcing every conductor into the same bend radius. Every configuration in the UNITAP family has it.
7) How many ports do Burndy UNITAP run/tap connectors have?
Three or four, depending on which you order. The 1PLD44 and 1PLD2504 are 4-port; the 1PLD3503 is 3-port. Port count is what limits how many branch conductors you can land at one location, so if you need four terminations you're choosing between the two 4-port versions and their wire ranges decide which.
8) Can I use a Burndy UNITAP for grounding and bonding taps?
Grounding and bonding connections are among the listed applications for the UNITAP run/tap line, along with distribution splicing and panelboard or switchgear wiring. It accepts both copper and aluminum stranded conductors, and the factory oxide inhibitor is there to keep resistance low at the interface over time.
