Burndy UNITAP Aluminum Multi-Tap Run/Tap Connector

The Burndy UNITAP Aluminum Multi-Tap Run/Tap Connector family provides clear plastisol-covered, insulated splicing and tapping solutions for aluminum and copper conductors in service entrance and distribution work. This connector series is available in configurations ranging from a 3-Port, 1-Sided Entry design accepting 2/0-14 AWG conductors up to a 6-Port, 2-Sided Entry design accepting 14-4 AWG conductors, letting installers select the port count and wire range that fits the run. Every UNITAP connector in this family shares an aluminum body and aluminum hardware, Al/Cu conductor compatibility, a pre-installed oxide inhibitor, and a minimum 600V rating, with UL Listing and CSA Certification for code-compliant installations.

Key Features

  • Port Count & Entry Configuration: Choose from a 3-Port, 1-Sided Entry connector or a 6-Port, 2-Sided Entry connector to match your branching requirements.
  • Wire Range Options: Options span 2/0-14 AWG on the 3-Port version to 14-4 AWG on the 6-Port version, covering a broad range of Al/Cu conductor sizes across the family.
  • Aluminum Construction: Aluminum body and aluminum hardware throughout the series, rated Al/Cu for mixed conductor runs.
  • Clear Insulation: Clear plastisol covering insulates every connection while allowing visual inspection of the splice.
  • Pre-Installed Oxide Inhibitor: Factory-applied inhibitor on every connector in the family guards against aluminum oxidation at the termination point.
  • Voltage Rating: Rated 600V minimum across the family for service entrance and distribution applications.
  • Hardware: Screw hardware with a hex key drive for secure termination, sized to the connector configuration.
  • Connector Type: UNITAP Multi Tap / Run-Tap configuration for branching taps off a single conductor run.

Burndy 1PL2/03 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I land both aluminum and copper conductors in the Burndy UNITAP multi-tap connector?
Yes. The UNITAP run/tap connectors are rated Al/Cu, so aluminum and copper can go in the same block. On the 6-port BIBD46 the stranded aluminum range is 8 AWG to 4 AWG and the stranded copper range is 14 AWG to 4 AWG, so copper reaches smaller sizes than aluminum does. A factory pre-installed oxide inhibitor is already in each port, which is what you want for the aluminum terminations.
2) Should I get the 3-port or the 6-port UNITAP connector?
It comes down to how many taps you are pulling and how big the conductors are. The 3-port, 1-sided entry version (1PL2/03) accepts 2/0 through 14 AWG, so it is the one to use when a larger service or feeder conductor has to land. The 6-port, 2-sided entry version (BIBD46) handles 14 through 4 AWG only, but gives you six ports with wires entering from both sides, which suits branching several small circuits off a run inside a panel or load center. If you need a 1/0 or 2/0 conductor in the block, the 6-port will not take it.
3) Can I use this Burndy UNITAP connector in a direct-buried or underground splice?
No. The UNITAP aluminum multi-tap connector is not rated for direct burial. Keep it inside an enclosure, panel, load center or gutter. For a buried splice you need a connector specifically listed for direct burial along with a submersible or buried-rated enclosure.
4) Does this Burndy multi-tap connector meet code for a 600V service entrance tap?
It is UL Listed and CSA Certified to UL 468A-468B, with a 600V rating, which is what an inspector looks for on a service entrance or distribution tap. It is also RoHS compliant. Note the listing is UL and CSA separately rather than a cULus mark.
5) What size hex key do I need to tighten a Burndy UNITAP connector?
A 1/8 inch hex key drives the screws on the 6-port UNITAP block, which uses 1/4 inch screws, one per port for six total. No proprietary tool, but the ports are recessed under the plastisol cover, so a long-arm or ball-end hex wrench makes the work easier in a crowded gutter.
6) Will a 6-port Burndy UNITAP connector fit inside my panel gutter?
The 6-port BIBD46 body measures 2.83 inches long, 1.50 inches wide and 1.25 inches high. Check that against your gutter space and remember to allow bending radius for six conductors entering from two sides before you commit to the location.
7) Is the Burndy UNITAP connector insulated, or do I still have to tape the splice?
It comes insulated. A clear plastisol cover encloses the connector body, so no additional taping is needed and you can still see the conductor seated in the port for inspection later. Rating is 600V minimum.
8) Is the body or hardware tin plated on this Burndy UNITAP connector?
No plating. Both the body and the screw hardware are bare aluminum, unplated. That is why the pre-applied oxide inhibitor in the ports matters: it is the corrosion barrier at the aluminum termination. If your spec calls for a tin-plated body, this is not the connector for it.
9) Can I use a Burndy UNITAP block for a grounding or bonding tap?
Yes, grounding and bonding connections are among the intended uses for the UNITAP run/tap family, along with service entrance and panel distribution wiring. Match the wire range to the version you order: 14 to 4 AWG on the 6-port block, 2/0 to 14 AWG on the 3-port.
