Burndy UNITAP Clear Insulated Aluminum Multi-Tap Connector, Al/Cu Rated

The Burndy UNITAP™ series delivers clear insulated aluminum multi-tap connectors for reliable run/tap connections in Al/Cu rated electrical systems, available in configurations from 2 ports up to 6 ports to match the branch-circuit tap requirements of the job. Every connector in the family features single side entry, a wire range of #14-2/0 AWG (8 AWG-2/0 AWG aluminum, 14 AWG-2/0 Str copper), a 600V minimum voltage rating, and a pre-installed oxide inhibitor at the aluminum/copper interface. The line is UL Listed to UL468A-468B and CSA Certified, making it well suited to commercial and industrial power distribution work where dependable run/tap splicing is required.

Key Features

  • Port Configurations: Available in 2-port and 6-port versions with single side entry, so you can select the exact tap count a run/tap application calls for.
  • Wire Range: Accepts #14-2/0 AWG conductors (8 AWG-2/0 AWG aluminum, 14 AWG-2/0 Str copper) for flexible run/tap connections across each port count.
  • Durable Construction: Aluminum connector body with aluminum hardware, built for Al/Cu rated service in demanding electrical environments.
  • Screw-Secured Ports: Each port is secured with its own screw and tightened using a 3/16 hex key, matching the connector's port count.
  • Clear Insulation: Clear plastisol covering protects the connection while allowing visual inspection of conductor seating and termination quality.
  • Pre-Installed Oxide Inhibitor: Factory-applied to help prevent corrosion at the aluminum/copper interface, reducing installer prep time.
  • Voltage Rating: Minimum 600V rating suited to commercial and industrial power distribution applications.
  • Finish: Unplated aluminum connector body and hardware throughout the family.

Burndy BITO2/0 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire sizes will a Burndy UNITAP multi-tap connector accept?
Each port on the UNITAP takes 8 AWG through 2/0 AWG aluminum, or 14 AWG through 2/0 AWG stranded copper. That covers a 2/0 run conductor down to 14 AWG copper control or branch taps in the same block. Anything larger than 2/0 or smaller than 14 AWG copper is out of range.
2) Can I land aluminum and copper conductors in the same UNITAP connector?
Yes, it's an Al/Cu rated connector, so aluminum and copper can share the block. The aluminum body ships with oxide inhibitor already applied at the aluminum/copper interface, so you don't need to brush and paste the conductors before insertion. No plating on the body or hardware.
3) Should I order the 2-port or the 6-port UNITAP?
Two versions are offered: the 2-port BITO2/0 and the 6-port BIBS2/06. Count your taps plus the run conductor, since every conductor needs its own port. A single run feeding one tap fits the 2-port; a feeder split out to multiple branch circuits, or several grounding tap-offs off one conductor, needs the 6-port. Both share the same 8 AWG-2/0 aluminum / 14 AWG-2/0 copper range and 600V rating.
4) Is the Burndy UNITAP connector UL Listed for use in a panelboard tap?
UL Listed to UL468A-468B and CSA Certified, rated 600V minimum, which covers commercial and industrial power distribution including panelboard and switchgear tap connections. It is also RoHS compliant.
5) Can I use this insulated tap connector in a direct burial or underground splice?
No. The UNITAP is not rated for direct burial. The clear plastisol cover insulates the connection but is not a submersible or buried-splice seal, so keep it inside an enclosure, panel, gutter, or junction box. For a buried tap you need a connector specifically rated for direct burial.
6) What tool do I need to tighten the UNITAP set screws?
A 3/16 hex key. Each port has its own screw, so the 6-port version means six screws to torque and the 2-port version two. Bring a 3/16 allen or hex bit driver to the job; nothing else is required to make the termination.
7) Do I need to tape or cover the UNITAP after making the splice?
No taping needed. The connector comes with a clear plastisol insulating cover already on it, and because it's clear you can see conductor seating and how far each wire is inserted after the screws are set. That visual check is the main reason electricians pick the clear body over an opaque cover.
8) How much room do I need in the box or gutter for a 6-port UNITAP?
The 6-port UNITAP measures 4.20 x 1.31 x 1.38 inches. Allow for that plus conductor bending radius, since all conductors enter from a single side, which keeps the wire dressing to one face of the connector.
9) Will the UNITAP work for a grounding or bonding tap-off?
Yes, grounding and bonding tap-offs are one of its listed applications, and the Al/Cu rating means a copper ground conductor can be tapped off an aluminum run. Keep conductors within 14 AWG to 2/0 AWG copper stranded or 8 AWG to 2/0 AWG aluminum.
10) Is a multi-tap connector like this better than a split bolt for tapping a feeder?
Different jobs. A split bolt makes one tap and has to be taped out by hand. The UNITAP is a screw-secured block with 2 or 6 ports, arriving already insulated with clear plastisol and with oxide inhibitor in place, so one connector handles multiple taps off a single run and needs no field taping. Use it where you want several branch taps off one 2/0-or-smaller conductor, or where mixing aluminum and copper.
