Callan KD2006 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Callan 205S deadbolt have a keyed exterior, or is it thumbturn only?
Thumbturn only. The 205S is a one-sided deadbolt: there is no key cylinder and no exterior plate at all, just the turn button on the interior face. That's what the half-bore function means, and it's why it's used on doors where you never need to unlock from the outside, such as a garage-to-house door, a storeroom, an interior office, or the inactive leaf of a pair. If someone needs to get in from the outside with a key, this is the wrong part and you want a cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt instead.
2) What size holes does the Callan 205S half-bore deadbolt need in the door?
Standard bored-door prep: 2-1/8 inch cross bore through the face and a 1 inch edge bore for the latch. If your door already has a tubular deadbolt in it, that prep is almost certainly what's there, so the 205S drops straight in. On a new door you drill it with an ordinary 2-1/8 inch hole saw. Note the cross bore still goes through the door even though nothing shows on the outside face, so on a door with no existing prep you will see the bore edge from outside unless the exterior side is covered.
3) Will the Callan 205S latch into the strike that's already in my jamb?
The 205S throws a 1 inch bolt with a round corner latch faceplate. A 1 inch throw is the same projection as a typical residential tubular deadbolt, so an existing deadbolt strike in the jamb will normally accept it, provided the backset you set (2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch) matches how the door is bored. Watch the faceplate: it's round corner, so if the existing latch mortise in the door edge was cut square corner you'll need to square out the corners or file the mortise to suit.
4) What's the difference between the Callan 205S and a regular single cylinder deadbolt?
A single cylinder deadbolt has a key outside and a turn inside. The 205S drops the key entirely, no cylinder, no outside plate, just the interior turn. So there's nothing to pick or bump from the exterior and nothing to key, but also no way to get in if the door shuts behind you. Pick the 205S where the outside face never needs to open by key. If it does, comparable single cylinder options include the Cal-Royal ED500, also Grade 3 and rated for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, or the Cal-Royal LSD with an ADA ergonomic thumbturn over the same thickness range.
5) What is the closest equivalent to a Callan 205S one sided deadbolt if I need a non-keyed thumbturn deadbolt on an exit door?

The Cal-Royal CRB800 is a Grade 1 heavy duty single cylinder deadbolt with a UL 3-hour fire rated latch. 10) Which deadbolt takes an interchangeable core if I am standardizing keying across a building, since the Callan 205S is not keyed?
Two options accept cores. The Deltana CL200LAIC is a Grade 2 single deadbolt prepped for an interchangeable core with a 2-3/4 inch backset and cylinder x thumbturn operation.
