Camden CM-40 Series All-Active Switch, 4-1/2" Round Switch, SPDT Wheelchair/PUSH TO OPEN, Blue Text

CM-40, CM-41 and CM-60 Series 'All-Active' push plate switches are heavy-duty, ADA-compliant door controls. Faceplates are stainless steel or solid brass, and the assembly is designed for easy installation. The CM-41 4-1/2" square stainless steel backplate is large enough to dress-up (cover) a poorly installed electrical box. It will also fit perfectly on most 4-1/2" surface boxes.

CAMDEN PUSH PLATE SWITCHES NOW INCLUDE 'WR' WATER RESISTANCE AS STANDARD!

Camden Door Controls CM-40/4 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Camden CM-40 push plate work with my 24V door operator?
Yes. The CM-40 runs on 12 or 24V AC or DC and draws 40 mA, which covers the accessory power output on most low energy swing door operators. The switch contacts are rated 15A at 30 VDC, so it can also be wired straight into a maglock or strike circuit rather than through an operator.
2) Is the CM-40 a normally open or normally closed switch?
Both are available on the same device. The CM-40 uses an SPDT Form C momentary contact, so you land the wire on the common plus either the N.O. or the N.C. leg depending on what your operator or access control input expects. Momentary means the contact returns as soon as the plate is released, which is what a door operator activation input needs.
3) Does the Camden CM-40 meet ADA requirements for an accessible door actuator?
Camden lists the CM-40 as ADA compliant. The 'All-Active' design means the entire faceplate is the actuator and it takes minimal force to trip, so a user does not have to find and press a specific spot. Four switch studs and rubber dampers carry the load and keep the action quiet under repeat traffic.
4) Does the Camden CM-40 have a built-in time delay, or do I need a different plate for that?
The Camden CM-40 is a momentary SPDT switch - the contact transfers only while the plate is pressed, so any hold-open timing has to come from the operator or an external relay. If you want the delay in the plate itself, the Alarm Controls JP Series is a pneumatic time delay jumbo push plate, and the Alarm Controls PD Series offers pneumatic time delay in vandal resistant push plates.
5) I need a square stainless push plate instead of a round one - what should I use?
The Camden CM-40 faceplate is round at 4-1/2 inches. If the opening calls for a square stainless plate, the SDC 480 Series push plate actuators are built with 18 gauge stainless steel construction and are the square-format alternative in this category. Both are momentary actuators for automatic door operators; the choice is largely about plate shape and how it lands on the existing box.
6) There is no wall to mount the CM-40 on at our accessible entrance - what do we use?
The Camden CM-40 is a single gang wall-mounted push plate. For an approach with no wall, the SDC BP Series square bollard posts are 6 inch by 6 inch, with the BPS6 surface mount at 42 inches and the BPG6 in-ground version at 54 inches, and are made to carry an actuator out in the walkway. For a tall wall-mounted target instead of a 4-1/2 inch plate, the SDC 480AA Series is a 36 inch by 6 inch Ingress-R.E.X touch panel column for ADA compliant access control.
7) What is the difference between the standard wheelchair and the 'Active Wheelchair' faceplate on the Camden CM-40?
It is purely the graphic. Both carry blue 'PUSH TO OPEN' text; one uses the conventional seated wheelchair symbol, the other the dynamic 'Active Wheelchair' figure some jurisdictions and facility standards now specify. Electrically and dimensionally they are the same switch, so pick whichever matches the signage already used across your building.
8) What does the Kinetic option on the Camden CM-40 actually do for the installer?
The CM-40 is offered as either a standard hard-wired switch or a Kinetic version, and each of the two blue faceplate graphics is available both ways. Kinetic is the wireless build, which is why wireless communication is listed on the product. If you are running conduit anyway, the non-Kinetic switch is the straightforward choice; the Kinetic version is what you use when you cannot get wire to the push plate location.
9) Is the Camden CM-40 push plate rated for exterior or wash-down locations?
Camden push plate switches now ship with 'WR' water resistance as standard, so the CM-40 is not limited to dry interior openings. The faceplate is stainless steel in a US32 / 630 finish, which is the standard bright stainless used on most commercial door hardware, so it will sit alongside 630 pulls and plates without a finish mismatch.
10) I need a bigger push plate than the 4-1/2 inch round Camden. What are my options?
Within Camden, the CM-60 is the 6 inch round plate (152mm x 28.6mm) and mounts to single gang, double gang or a 4 x 4 box, which is often easier on a retrofit. Going wider, the SDC 480 Series push plate actuators are 18 gauge stainless, and if you want a full-height touch surface the SDC 480AA Ingress-R.E.X column is a 36 inch by 6 inch panel. Alarm Controls also offers a jumbo plate in the JP Series.
11) I'm doing a vestibule with two sets of doors. Is the CM-40 the right switch?
The CM-40 will operate a single opening fine, but a vestibule usually needs one actuation to sequence both door sets. The SDC 480V Series is built for that, with dual switch activation for vestibule use. For exterior approach in a parking lot or drive-up, the SDC BP Series 6 inch square bollard posts mount the actuator off the building entirely, in a 42 inch surface mount or 54 inch in-ground version.
12) Can the Camden CM-40 replace a round push plate from another brand that's already on my wall?
If the existing plate is fed from a single gang box, the CM-40 lands on the same prep, and at 4-1/2 inches in diameter it covers a single gang ring. Locknetics offers a large round push plate in the PPH Series that also comes with a box, so on a Locknetics replacement check what box is in the wall first. Where the old plate was mounted on a 4-square, step up to the Camden CM-60, which accepts 4 x 4.
13) We have an abuse-prone entrance - is the CM-40 the right choice or is there a tougher option?
The Camden CM-40 uses a heavy-duty stainless steel faceplate with an all-active design that actuates anywhere on the plate. Where vandalism is the main concern, the Alarm Controls PD Series covers the PD, PN, PS and PT vandal resistant push plates, which are built specifically for that duty and add pneumatic time delay. Consider the trade between the CM-40's low actuation force, which suits ADA use, and a vandal resistant plate's construction.
14) For a vestibule with inner and outer doors, can I just use two CM-40 plates?
Two Camden CM-40 plates will work if each simply signals its own operator, since the CM-40 gives an SPDT Form C contact rated 15 A at 30 VDC and can be wired to either normally open or normally closed inputs. If you need the sequencing that a vestibule usually calls for, the SDC 480V Series is a vestibule push plate actuator with dual switch activation built for that function.
15) What looks like a substitute for the CM-40 but will not drop into the same single gang box?
The Camden CM-40 mounts to a single gang box and measures 4-1/2 inches across. The SDC 480AA Series is a 36 inch by 6 inch touch panel column and the SDC BP Series bollard posts are 6 inch by 6 inch free-standing units - both are ADA actuation devices, but neither replaces a 4-1/2 inch plate on an existing single gang opening. Within round-plate options, the Locknetics PPH-100-PL is supplied with its own box, which changes the rough-in you plan for.
16) Is the Camden CM-40 heavy-duty enough for a high traffic entrance in a hospital or school?
It is built for commercial duty, not residential. Construction is stainless steel, the switch sits on four studs with rubber dampers to absorb repeated strikes, and the contacts are rated 15A at 30 VDC, well above the load a low energy operator input puts on them. For facilities standardizing across many openings, all four blue faceplate builds share the same single gang prep and the same 12/24V AC/DC wiring.
