Camden Door Controls CM-701U-PC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Which Camden CM-70 pull station do I order for a maglock that needs a normally closed dry contact?
For a single normally closed contact, order the CM-701U. The CM-70 Series splits by switch configuration: CM-701U has 1 N/C switch, CM-702U has 2 N/C switches (one to break the lock power, one for an alarm or monitoring input), and CM-703U carries 1 N/C plus 1 N/O switch when something has to be energized on release. Note the switch states listed are with the station closed and reset; pull the station and the contacts flip.
2) Will a Camden CM-70 pull station fit a standard single gang box?
Yes, the CM-70 Series universal pull station is made for single gang mounting and stands only 3/4 inch off the finished wall, so it will not catch a passing cart or shoulder in a corridor. The plate itself measures 4.5 by 3.5 by 1.375 inches.
3) Can I run a Camden CM-70 blue pull station on a 24VDC access control circuit?
Yes. The CM-70 pull station is rated to 30VDC, which covers the 12VDC and 24VDC access control and maglock circuits these stations normally switch. It is a dry contact device, so the station carries your control voltage rather than supplying any.
4) What can I add over a blue pull station to stop people pulling it for no reason?
Two approaches exist. The Camden CM-70 'Universal' pull station is offered as a version with a clear plastic cover (CM-701U-PC, CM-702U-PC, CM-703U-PC) and a version without one, so the cover is chosen at time of order. Where a cover has to go over a device already on the wall, the Dortronics 6510/COV is an anti-tamper alarm cover for 6500 Series pull stations and 5000 Series push buttons. The Camden cover ships as part of the pull station itself; the Dortronics part is a separate cover with its own alarm and fits the Dortronics devices it is built for.
5) The wall is block and there is no box in it - how do I mount an emergency pull station?
The Camden CM-70 'Universal' pull station is designed for single gang mounting and protrudes only 3/4 inch from the wall, so it needs a single gang opening behind it. On solid wall where no box can be set, the Cal-Royal 8641-SM is a single gang surface mount box from the 8600 Series, which gives a single gang cavity fastened to the wall face rather than recessed into it.
6) What do I use instead of a wall pull station if the exit signal has to come from the door itself?
A pull station is a wall device the person operates by hand; the Camden CM-70 'Universal' is single gang mounted and reset with a small screwdriver. When the release signal needs to come from the hardware in the door instead, request-to-exit switch kits do that job: Command Access REX-KIT-ML is a field installable request to exit kit for ML1-Series mortise locks, CRSREXKIT-ED is a field installable REX kit for Cal Royal 22/98 and Sargent 80 Series with SPDT switch, and CYREXKIT-ED is a field REX kit for Corbin 5000 and Yale 7000 exit devices. Those signal on operation of the lock or exit device rather than on a separate pull.
7) What is the difference between the CM-701U-PC and the plain CM-701U?
The PC suffix adds a clear plastic cover over the pull handle. Same switch configuration either way, the cover just puts a deliberate second step in front of the pull. Order the covered version (CM-701U-PC, CM-702U-PC, CM-703U-PC) where nuisance pulls are a problem, in a school corridor, a lobby or a psychiatric or memory care wing. Order the uncovered version where the station is behind a counter or in a staff-only area and speed matters more.
8) Does the Camden CM-70 pull station have to be replaced after someone pulls it?
No. The CM-70 resets with a small screwdriver, so a maintenance tech restores the door in seconds without pulling the plate or replacing a break glass element. That is the main reason property managers and facility crews put these on emergency egress and door release points that get pulled by mistake.
9) Do I have to order a separate label for a Camden universal pull station, or is the wording included?
The wording comes with it. Universal models ship with 4 message labels, so one part number covers several door applications and you pick the label at install instead of specifying the legend on the purchase order. That is what makes these worth standardizing on across a facility, one stock item instead of a legend for every opening.
10) I have no box in the wall where the pull station needs to go. Can I surface mount a Camden CM-70?
The CM-70 is a single gang device, so on a wall you cannot cut, pair it with a single gang surface mount box. The Cal-Royal 8641-SM is a single gang surface mount box from the 8600 Series and is the usual fix on block, tile or glass fronted walls where fishing a flush box is not practical.
11) Should I use a pull station or a request to exit switch in the device for door release?
Different jobs. A CM-70 pull station is a wall mounted manual release, deliberate, obvious, and it stays latched until someone resets it with a screwdriver, which is what you want for emergency egress and door release. A request to exit switch lives inside the hardware and signals momentarily when someone uses the door normally, like the Command Access REX-KIT-ML for ML1 Series mortise locks or the CRSREXKIT-ED for Cal Royal 22/98 and Sargent 80 Series exit devices. Most openings end up with both: the REX for everyday egress, the pull station for the emergency case.
12) I need the exit device to make noise when someone hits it - is a pull station the right part?
The Camden CM-70 'Universal' pull station is a switch device: CM-701U carries 1 N/C switch, CM-702U carries 2 N/C switches, and CM-703U carries 1 N/C and 1 N/O switch, rated 30VDC, and those contacts drive whatever the panel does next. For the audible itself, the Adams Rite 29-0218 is a piezo electric horn with multi-voltage compatibility, and the RCI 914 Series is a delayed egress sounder with field-selectable volume output up to 102dB. The pull station provides the contact; the horn or sounder provides the sound.
13) Is an exit sensor bar an alternative to a pull station on an egress door?
They are different actions. The Camden CM-70 'Universal' pull station is a blue commercial device the user pulls by hand and that is then reset with a small screwdriver. The DynaLock 6451-36 is an exit sensor bar for a 36 inch door, mounted across the door and operated by touch as the person leaves. A pull station stays latched until someone resets it; a sensor bar is operated in the normal course of passing through the door, so the two are usually specified for different roles on the same opening rather than one replacing the other.
14) What is the difference between ordering the CM-702U and the CM-703U?
The switch configuration. The Camden CM-702U carries 2 N/C switches; the CM-703U carries 1 N/C switch and 1 N/O switch. The CM-701U carries a single N/C switch. All three share the same 'Universal' body, are supplied with 4 message labels, measure 4.5 inches high by 3.5 inches wide, and each is available with or without the clear plastic cover as the -PC suffix. Pick the switch count and contact type the panel inputs require; the switch states given are with the station closed and reset, and reverse when it is pulled.
15) Is the Camden CM-70 pull station rated for commercial use, and what color is it?
Blue, and it is a commercial rated device. The blue body is the point: it visually separates a door release or emergency exit station from a red fire alarm pull, so occupants and inspectors do not confuse the two on the same corridor.
16) How many versions of the Camden CM-70 pull station are there and how do I spec the right one?
Six orderable combinations, from two decisions. First the switch count: 1 N/C, 2 N/C, or 1 N/C plus 1 N/O. Then cover or no cover. Every switch configuration is available both with and without the clear plastic cover, so nothing on the switching side is lost by adding the cover. All of them are blue.
