1) Which Camden CM-Series surface box do I pick for a narrow jamb versus a double gang push plate?
Five shapes cover it. CM-23 is the narrow box in standard depth, CM-23D is the same narrow footprint in a deep version for devices that need more room behind the plate, CM-43CBL is a double gang standard box, CM-43CBLA is the double gang built for hands free switches, and CM-69S is a 6 inch round box in standard depth. Match the box to the plate you are mounting: narrow for a jamb-width switch, double gang for a wide push plate, round for a 6 inch round actuator.
2) Can a Camden ABS surface box be mounted on a wall or jamb without cutting into it?
That is exactly what a surface box is for. It fastens to the face of the jamb, mullion, or wall, so there is no back box cut-in and no coring of a hollow metal frame. Use it where the substrate is masonry, tile, or a frame you are not allowed to open up. If the finish surface can be cut and you want the switch flush, a flush or semi-flush box is the better choice; Camden builds those too.
3) Is the Camden CM-23 box plastic or metal, and will it hold up in a public corridor?
It is a black polymer ABS box, flame and impact resistant. That is the point of the plastic version in Camden's range: it takes an abuse hit in a public corridor and it does not shield an RF signal. For a high-abuse location where you want steel, Camden also makes metal boxes in the same family.
4) Can I mount a wireless door control transmitter in a Camden ABS jamb box?
Yes, and it is the reason to specify the ABS version over metal. Camden calls out the plastic models for use with wireless door control transmitters, because plastic does not attenuate the radio the way a steel box does. Note the box itself is not an electronic device and has no wireless electronics in it, it is the housing.
5) I am standardizing touchless actuators across a building. Which Camden surface box goes with hands free switches?
The CM-43CBLA is the double gang version specified for hands free switches, so that is the one to standardize on for touchless wave-to-open actuators. If some openings use a 6 inch round actuator instead, the CM-69S round box covers those in the same ABS family, which keeps one box line across the facility.
