Camden Door Controls CM-331/40 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Camden CM-331 touchless switch run on my existing 24VDC door power supply?
Yes. The CM-331 touchless switch is line powered and accepts 12VAC, 12VDC, 24VDC or 24VAC, so a standard 24VDC access control supply works. Current draw is 40 mA, which is negligible on a typical door supply budget.
2) Can the CM-331 switch a magnetic lock directly, or do I need a separate relay?
It has one onboard SPDT relay rated 3 amps at 30 V, wired as a multi-function output. That handles most maglocks and electric strikes directly at low voltage. If your lock draws more than 3 amps or runs on line voltage, drive an external relay or power supply input instead of switching the load through the switch.
3) Is the Camden CM-331 wired fail-safe or fail-secure?
Either. The relay output on the CM-331 is field selectable for fail-safe or fail-secure, so the same unit works on a maglock that must drop on power loss and on a fail-secure strike. You set it at install rather than ordering a different model.
4) Which faceplate size should I order for a touchless door switch mounted in a standard electrical box?
The CM-331/40 hand icon switch comes in four plate formats: single gang, narrow (/N), double gang (/W), and 6 inch round (/R). Single gang drops onto a standard one-gang box, narrow suits a mullion or tight jamb where a full gang plate will not sit flat, double gang covers an oversized or previously modified opening, and the 6 inch round is the high-visibility option for corridors and restroom entries.
5) What is the difference between the SGLR version of the CM-331 and the plain version?
SGLR adds the plug-in tri-color light ring, which illuminates red, green or blue around the sensor to show door state. The ring is available on the single gang, double gang and 6 inch round stainless steel faceplates, and it can be driven by the switch itself or controlled remotely from your access system. Without the light ring you get activation only, no visual status.
6) Can the CM-331 be mounted outside on an exterior entrance?
No. The CM-331 is rated for indoor application only. For an exterior entrance, pick a weather-rated touchless actuator instead of putting this one in a jamb exposed to rain or washdown.
7) Can I tie a request-to-exit signal and a door contact into the CM-331?
Yes, both. The CM-331 has REX and door contact inputs, so the switch can be triggered from an exit device or reader and can monitor door position to cut the hold open timer once the door closes. That is what lets it hold open only as long as the opening actually needs.
8) Does the Camden CM-331 have an adjustable sensing range, and can I stop it triggering from passing traffic?
It uses an active infrared air sensor with an adjustable operating range and selectable motion sensing, so you can tighten detection down to a deliberate hand wave rather than anyone walking past. That adjustment matters most on narrow corridors and on plates mounted near a traffic path.
9) What is the difference between event mode and toggle mode on a touchless door switch like the CM-331?
The CM-331 relay is selectable for Event or Toggle. Event means one wave produces a single timed output, which is what you want on an automatic operator or a door release. Toggle means one wave latches the relay on and the next wave turns it off, useful for holding a door unlocked or keeping an operator in automatic for a period.
10) Can I get a wireless version of the CM-331 so I do not have to pull wire across the opening?
The CM-331 supports an optional wireless transmitter, which lets the switch send its activation signal to a receiver instead of running control wire back to the operator. Note the switch itself is still line powered at 12VAC/DC, 24VDC or 24VAC, so power has to reach the plate even when the signal goes wireless.
11) I need to match touchless switches across a building. Which finishes does the CM-331/40 come in?
Black and stainless steel. For standardizing a facility, stainless is the one to spec if you want it to read with other stainless plates and pull hardware, and it is also the finish offered in the double gang format. Black is available in single gang, narrow, double gang and 6 inch round.
12) Does the CM-331 have a built-in hold open timer or do I need a separate timer module?
Hold open timing is built in, so on most single-relay applications you do not need a separate timer module on the door. Combined with the door contact input, the timer can be cut short once the door is confirmed closed.
13) What size is the Camden CM-331 touchless switch and how much does it weigh?
Listed dimensions are 5.5 x 5.25 x 2 inches with a weight of 0.4 lb. The depth figure is the one to watch: confirm your back box has room behind the plate before you commit to a location.
