1) How much wiring space does the Carlon B620 ceiling box give me for box fill?
20 cubic inches. That is the figure you use when you run a box fill calculation for the conductors, device, clamps, and grounds landing in it. The box has zero knockouts, so every cable enters through the built-in non-metallic cable entries rather than a punched opening.
2) What is the difference between the B620K, B620KR, B620KG and B620HR versions?
They differ by hanger size and whether a ground lug is included. B620K is the standard large hanger only. B620KR is a large hanger only version. B620KG-UPC adds a ground lug to the large hanger. B620HR-UPC is the small hanger with a ground lug. Pick the small hanger for tighter joist spacing, the large hanger for wider bays, and a ground lug version if you are landing an equipment ground on the box for a metal fixture.
3) Is this a new-construction box or can I put it in a finished ceiling?
The B620 is a new-work box. The adjustable bar hanger spans between joists and is fastened to them, so you need open ceiling framing, either before drywall or through an opened ceiling. For an existing finished ceiling with the drywall staying up, use an old-work retrofit ceiling box or a remodel fan brace instead.
4) Do I need a ground lug version if I am wiring a metal light fixture with NM cable?
A plastic box does not bond anything on its own, so if the fixture needs an equipment ground you have to carry it through. The B620KG-UPC and B620HR-UPC come with a ground lug on the hanger assembly for that purpose. The plain hanger versions, B620K and B620KR-UPC, do not include the lug, and you would splice the grounds to the fixture directly.
5) Why does this ceiling box have no knockouts, and how does the cable get in?
Number of knockouts is zero by design. Non-metallic boxes of this type use integral cable entry ports with built-in clamping rather than punched knockouts, so there are no unused openings left open in the ceiling. If your job calls for conduit terminating at the box with a fitting into a knockout, this is not the box for it, use a metallic ceiling box.
6) Is the Carlon blue ceiling box UL listed, and where is it made?
It carries UL e11461 and is made in the United States. The blue non-metallic body is the standard color convention for residential-grade NM-cable boxes, which helps an inspector identify it on a rough-in walk.
