1) Does the Thomas & Betts B620HG-UPC round ceiling box come with a ground lug, or do I add one?
The ground lug is built into the B620HG-UPC. It is a nonmetallic box, so there is no metal shell to bond through; the integral lug is where your equipment grounding conductor lands. That matters because a polycarbonate box gives you no continuity path of its own, and a metal fixture canopy mounted to it still needs its ground carried back to the branch circuit EGC. Wire the incoming ground to the lug and pigtail to the fixture from there.
2) How many conductors can I put in a 20 cubic inch ceiling box?
The box is 20 cubic inches, and NEC box fill is counted in volume per conductor size: 2.00 in3 each for 14 AWG, 2.25 for 12 AWG, 2.50 for 10 AWG. So 20 cubic inches works out to ten 14 AWG conductor allowances or eight at 12 AWG, before you subtract for devices, clamps, and grounds (all grounding conductors together count as one allowance, and a fixture stud or hickey counts as one). A typical switch leg plus a feed-through with a fixture is comfortable here; a four-way junction of 12 AWG home runs is not.
3) What are swing clamps on a ceiling box and can I install one in an existing finished ceiling?
Swing clamps are the retrofit mounting method: the clamps pivot out of the way as you push the box up through a cut hole in the drywall or plaster, then swing around and screw down to trap the box against the back of the finished surface. That is exactly what makes the B620HG-UPC an old-work box. No access above the ceiling and no joist or bar hanger needed. On new construction with the joists open you would normally nail or bracket-mount instead.
4) Can I hang a ceiling fan from a swing clamp nonmetallic ceiling box?
No. A drywall-supported swing clamp box is not a fan-rated outlet box and it is not a fixture-support box for anything heavy. NEC requires paddle fans to be supported by a box or assembly listed and marked for fan support, independently secured to the building structure. Use a fan-rated brace box for that. The B620HG-UPC is for lighting outlets and junction work where the load is carried by the ceiling surface and the clamps, not a rotating load.
5) Will a standard 4 inch round light fixture canopy cover this box?
The box is a round ceiling box with a 4 inch diameter, so standard 4 inch round fixture canopies and round blank covers land on it. Fixture mounting screws pick up the box's own bosses. If your existing fixture was mounted on an octagon box with a crossbar, plan to reuse or replace the crossbar to suit the round pattern.
6) Polycarbonate vs metal ceiling box: which should I use for a commercial lighting retrofit?
Polycarbonate buys you two things a steel box does not: it is an insulator, so there is no shell to bond and no chance of energizing the enclosure, and it takes impact without denting or rusting. What you give up is threaded entries and any structural load capacity. Rule of thumb on a retrofit: nonmetallic where you are working NM cable into a finished ceiling and hanging a light, metallic where you have conduit to land, need EMT continuity as your ground path, or the fixture weight needs real support.
