1) What's the difference between the B518A, B518AR and B518P Carlon ceiling boxes?
They're the same 18 cubic inch blue 3-inch round non-metallic ceiling box in three mounting styles. B518A-UPC comes with mounting ears and swing clamps, which is what you want when you're going back into an existing ceiling and clamping to the drywall or plaster. B518AR-UPC uses captive nails, for new construction where you're nailing straight to a joist or stud before the ceiling goes up. B518P-UPC has integral clamps. Pick by how the box gets held, not by capacity, since all three hold the same 18 cubic inches.
2) Is the Carlon B518 an old work or new work ceiling box?
Depends which mounting version you order. The captive nail version, B518AR-UPC, is a new work box, the nails go into framing before the ceiling is closed up. The mounting ears and swing clamp version, B518A-UPC, is the one that goes into a finished ceiling through a cut hole. Same 3-inch round blue non-metallic body either way.
