1) Will a Carlon E987 Type C conduit body work with Schedule 80 PVC conduit, or is it Schedule 40 only?
Both. The Carlon E987 Type C conduit body is built for use with Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 conduit, so you can run it in a Schedule 80 stub-up or exposed-to-damage location and in ordinary Schedule 40 runs off the same part number. Trade sizes run 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch, and you match the body to the trade size of the conduit, not to the schedule.
2) What trade sizes does the Carlon E987 Type C conduit body come in, and which part number do I order?
Five trade sizes, each its own part: 3/4 inch is E987E-CAR, 1 inch is E987F-CAR, 1-1/4 inch is E987G-CAR, 1-1/2 inch is E987H-CAR, and 2 inch is E987J. There is no size adjustment in the body itself, so order by the trade size of the conduit entering it.
3) Should I use a Type C conduit body or an LB, LL or LR for my run?
A Type C body is the straight-through one. Both hubs are in line with each other, so it does not change direction at all, it just gives you a covered opening in the middle of a straight run to pull wire through or to get back into later for service. If you need to turn the run, a C is the wrong body: an LB turns back into a wall, an LL or LR turns left or right along a wall, and a T gives you a third opening for a branch. Use the C where the conduit keeps going the same way and you only want a pull point.
4) Can I use a PVC conduit body instead of a metal one in a corrosive or wet environment like a car wash or wastewater plant?
That is the case for the non-metallic body. The E987 is molded PVC rather than die cast metal, so there is nothing in it to rust or corrode when it is exposed to moisture, washdown, chlorides or corrosive vapor. It is also non-conductive, so unlike a metallic body it is not part of the equipment grounding path, which means your EGC has to be carried through as a wire in the raceway. That is the normal arrangement for a PVC system anyway, since PVC conduit is not a grounding conductor either.
5) Does the Carlon Type C conduit body come with a cover and gasket, or do I buy those separately?
The E987 ships as a body with its lid, and the lid is Carlon's textured type, which is the detail that matters when you are handling it with gloves on or reopening it later in a dirty location. Plan on solvent cement for the two conduit hubs, since a PVC body is glued rather than threaded, and pick up conduit clamps or straps to support the raceway on either side.
6) Can I use a Type C conduit body as a junction box to splice wires?
Treat it as a pull and access point, not a splice enclosure. The straight-through C body is there so you can pull conductors through a long or awkward run and get back into it for maintenance later. Conduit bodies have very limited volume, and the rule of thumb on the job is that splices belong in a box sized for them. If you need to make connections at that point, put in a PVC junction box instead of a C body.
