1) Will a Carlon E987 Type C conduit body work on Schedule 80 PVC conduit, or only Schedule 40?
Both. The Carlon Type C PVC conduit body is rated for use with Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 conduit, so you can drop it into a Sch 80 run where the conduit is exposed to physical damage without changing fitting brands. The socket takes a solvent-weld joint on either schedule at the same trade size.
2) What trade sizes does the Carlon E987 Type C conduit body come in?
Four trade sizes: 1/2 inch (4 cu. in.), 3/4 inch (12 cu. in.), 1-1/2 inch (32 cu. in.) and 2 inch. The part numbers run E987D for 1/2 inch, E987EL for 3/4 inch, E987H for 1-1/2 inch and E987J-CAR for 2 inch. Match the trade size to the conduit you are running, and use the cubic-inch figure when you are working out conductor fill for splices inside the body.
3) What is a Type C conduit body used for, and when should I use an LB or LL instead?
A Type C body is the straight-through style: conduit enters one end and leaves the other in line, with a removable cover in the middle giving you a pull point or splice point in a long run. Use it when the conduit is not changing direction and you just need access. If you need to turn the run, a Type C is the wrong body, you want an LB (turn to the back, typical for entering a wall), an LL or LR (turn left or right), or a T body for a three-way branch.
4) Do I need to ground through this conduit body?
It is non-metallic gray PVC, so it carries no equipment grounding path at all. Your equipment grounding conductor has to be pulled through and spliced or passed through the body, the same as anywhere else in a PVC raceway. That is different from a cast aluminum or malleable iron body, which bonds through the fitting itself.
5) Does the Carlon E987 conduit body come with the cover and gasket, or do I order the lid separately?
The body ships with its removable cover, and the lid is textured for grip so it is easier to handle and reseat when you are up a ladder or working in a wet trench. You do not need a separate cover part number for any of the four trade sizes.
6) Is a PVC conduit body suitable for a corrosive or damp environment like a car wash or water treatment plant?
Non-metallic PVC does not rust or corrode, which is the usual reason it gets specified over cast metal bodies in wash-down, chemical, and buried applications. The tradeoff is no metallic grounding path and lower physical impact resistance than a cast body, so in a high-abuse area pair it with Schedule 80 conduit, which this fitting also accepts.
7) Will this PVC conduit body match the gray conduit already installed in my building?
Yes, it is standard gray PVC, the same color family as Schedule 40 and 80 electrical conduit, so it blends into an existing run rather than standing out. For a property manager standardizing across buildings, the E987 series covers 1/2 through 2 inch under one brand and one finish.
