CDVI A22NB – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the CDVI A22NB Atrium controller come with an enclosure or cabinet?
No box. The A22NB is the A22 controller board on its own, so you supply the enclosure and, if you want standby power, the battery. The board measures 210 x 130 x 30 mm, which is what you need to check against whatever cabinet you plan to mount it in. Battery backup takes one 12Vdc 4.5Ah or 7Ah gel cell, so size the can accordingly. If you would rather buy it packaged with readers and credentials, the A22KITSTB kit pairs the same A22 with two STARPB readers and 15 credentials.
2) How many doors will one CDVI A22 controller actually run?
Two, but how you use them is a choice. The A22 board drives 2 doors and 2 readers, which you configure either as one door read in/out (reader on both sides) or two doors read in only. It will not do in/out on two doors at once. Beyond the single board, the Atrium system scales to 500 doors: you can link up to 10 A22 boards over Ethernet and hang up to 4 more A22s per A22 on the RS-485 bus.
3) Will the CDVI A22 work with readers I already have installed, or do I have to use CDVI readers?
Third-party readers work if they speak a format the A22 reads: 26, 30 and 44 bit Wiegand, Track 2 ABA, or reader-and-keypad card-plus-PIN. All CDVI readers are supported natively. If your existing heads are OSDP-only or a proprietary format outside that list, they will not drop onto this board. Check the output format on the back of the reader before you pull it.
4) Does the CDVI Atrium system need a server or a software licence to run?
Neither. The A22 has an embedded web server on the board, so you manage users and cards, lock and unlock doors, review events and read controller status from a browser. Management software is free. That is the main reason property managers and small integrators pick Atrium over a hosted platform: no annual licence and no PC that has to stay awake. The Ethernet port uses AES 256-bit encryption.
5) What is the difference between the CDVI A22NB and the A22KITSTB when I need a two-door access control job?
The A22NB is the Atrium A22 controller by itself with no enclosure - it controls 2 doors and 2 readers (1 door read in/out or 2 doors read in only), with an on-board Ethernet port, embedded web server, and 2 lock outputs at 750mA @ 12Vdc each. The A22KITSTB is a 2-door Atrium kit that pairs the A22 with 2 STARPB readers and 15 credentials. Choose the A22NB when the readers and credentials are already on site or already specified from the CDVI reader line, and the kit when the reader and credential side of the opening still needs to be filled.
6) I only have one door to control - do I still need a CDVI A22 controller?
A single opening does not require the two-door A22, which is built to control 2 doors and 2 readers and scale across an Atrium system to 500 doors. The Schlage Electronics CTE ENGAGE is a single door controller with a mobile-enabled multi-technology reader and a direct RS-485 connection, so the controller and reader arrive as one device for one opening. The A22 remains the fit where a second door is coming, or where read in/out is wanted on the one door - the A22 supports that on a single opening using both reader ports.
7) How far can I run the RS-485 bus from the A22 to the next controller?
1220 m, or 4000 feet, on the on-board RS-485 bus. That is enough to tie together buildings on a campus or the far end of a large warehouse without adding network drops. Each A22 accepts up to 4 more A22 boards on its bus, and up to 10 A22s link over Ethernet.
8) How many users and cards will an Atrium A22 hold, and does it keep a log?
Up to 10,000 users and 10,000 cards, with a 25,000 event buffer on board. For a multi-family property or a mid-size commercial building that is well clear of what you will ever enrol. Card enrolment runs through a quick enrolment mode rather than manual number entry, which matters when you are handing out 200 fobs on a turnover.
9) Can I mount a CDVI A22 controller in an unheated garage or a mechanical room?
Operating range is -22C to 50C, which is -4F to 122F. That covers an unconditioned parking garage, an attic mechanical space, or a gate house in most of North America. Below -4F you need a heated enclosure. Note the board is sold without a box, so environmental protection is entirely down to the cabinet you choose.
10) How many inputs does the A22 have for request-to-exit and door contacts?
Six multi-purpose inputs, doubling to 12 if you use zone doubling. On a two-door install that is enough for door position switches, REX devices and a tamper or two without adding an expansion module. The system is completely fuseless, and the terminal connectors snap on, so swapping the board out later does not mean re-landing every wire.
