OATEY 273958 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pressure range does the Cherne Air-Max test pump gauge read?
The Air-Max pump carries a 100 psi gauge, so it covers the low-pressure air testing most DWV and plumbing inspection work calls for. The gauge sits raised off the base rather than flush, which keeps it from taking a hit when the pump gets set down on a slab or tossed in a truck bed.
2) Does the Cherne Air-Max test pump come with the test plugs or balls?
No. The 273958 is the pump itself, with its hose and 100 psi gauge. Inflatable test balls, pneumatic plugs, and any adapters for the pipe size you are testing are ordered separately, so size those to the line before the test day.
3) Is the Cherne Air-Max a hand pump or does it need power?
It is a manual hand pump. Steel barrel, textured steel base you stand on to hold it in place while you stroke it, and a no-kink hose off the outlet. No air compressor or electrical supply needed, which is why it travels well for a one-man inspection or a punch-list air test.
4) What part number do I order for the Cherne Air-Max test pump, and what color is it?
Order Oatey 273958, the Cherne Air-Max test pump. It comes in yellow, which is the usual Cherne test-equipment color and easy to spot on a jobsite or in a shared tool crib.
5) How much does the Oatey 273958 test pump weigh for carrying between units?
3.6 lbs (1.36 kg). Light enough to carry up a ladder or between apartments on a multi-family punch list without a cart, and the steel barrel is doing the work rather than adding bulk.
6) Will the hose on this air test pump kink or crack from being coiled in a van?
The Air-Max uses a no-kink hose, so it handles repeated coiling and uncoiling between jobs. That plus the raised gauge and textured steel base are the three features Cherne built around field abuse rather than bench use.
