Color-Keyed 54970BE – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will this Color Keyed lug take 4/0 AWG copper cable?
Yes. The Color Keyed 54970BE compression lug is sized for 4/0 AWG conductor, and the purple color code is what identifies that die/cable size on the Color Keyed system. It is a copper barrel, so it is intended for copper conductor.
2) Is this lug rated for medium-voltage cable terminations?
It carries a 35 kV voltage rating, so it is suitable for medium-voltage terminations as well as ordinary 600 V distribution work. The lug itself is bare, with no insulation on the barrel, so the voltage rating is realized by the cable insulation and the terminating kit or tape/boot you build over it.
3) Can I use this copper lug on aluminum conductor?
No. The barrel is copper and sized for 4/0 copper conductor. Aluminum cable needs an aluminum-bodied or dual-rated AL9CU compression lug with the correct die, and the compound and die index differ. Using a copper barrel on aluminum conductor is not a listed termination.
4) Why choose a long-barrel lug over a standard short-barrel one?
A long barrel takes two crimps instead of one, which gives more contact area with the conductor and more mechanical pull-out strength. Electricians specify it on vibration-prone or high-current terminations such as generator leads, transformer pads and switchgear. A standard-barrel lug does the same electrical job on a static panel landing in less depth, so if you are tight on room behind the pad the short barrel is the easier fit.
5) Is this the same thing as a Blackburn lug?
Yes. Color Keyed is the Blackburn compression line, and this lug is labeled Color Keyed / Blackburn. If a drawing or a spec calls out a Blackburn Color Keyed 4/0 one-hole long-barrel lug with a 1/2 inch stud hole, 54970BE is that part.
6) Is this lug UL listed for an inspected commercial job?
It is built to UL E9809. That file number is what an inspector or a submittal package looks for on a compression connector, so it will satisfy a spec calling for a listed copper compression lug.
7) Does a one-hole lug need anything extra to keep the cable from rotating on the pad?
One-hole tongues can rotate around the bolt under torque or cable pull, so where a drawing calls for anti-rotation you either use a two-hole lug on a double-drilled pad or support the cable so it cannot twist the tongue. This 54970BE is a one-hole, 1/2 inch stud lug, so it lands on a single-tapped pad or bus hole.
8) Where is this lug manufactured?
These Color Keyed copper lugs are made in Mexico. Buyers tracking country of origin for a government or utility submittal should note that on the compliance sheet.
