Color-Keyed 54857BE – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Color Keyed 54857BE lug take 1 AWG cable, and is it copper or aluminum?
It's a copper compression lug sized for 1 AWG conductors. Copper barrel, so it's for copper cable terminations, not aluminum. Catalog number 54857BE under the Color Keyed / Blackburn label.
2) Is this cable lug UL listed for inspected commercial work?
It is UL listed under file E9809, which is what an AHJ or facilities inspector will want to see on a terminated conductor in a commercial panel or substation.
3) What does the green color on a Color Keyed lug mean?
Green is the Color Keyed die/conductor-size index, not a phase color by itself. Each cable size has its own color so an inspector or the next electrician can see at a glance that the right size lug and the matching color die were used. On this part green corresponds to the 1 AWG barrel.
4) Is this lug insulated, or do I have to tape or boot the barrel myself?
Bare copper, no insulation on the barrel. On a medium-voltage termination you'll be covering the barrel and pad yourself with tape, a heat shrink boot or a cover as the installation requires.
5) Why pick a long barrel lug over a standard barrel one?
The long barrel gives you more contact length on the conductor and room for two crimps instead of one, which is what you want on high-current or vibration-prone connections like generator leads and switchgear. A standard barrel is fine for general 600V panel work; this one is the heavier-duty termination.
6) Does this lug come with the mounting bolts and washers?
The lug itself is the item. Bolts, flat and Belleville washers and nuts for the 1/2 inch holes are ordered separately, along with the correct color-coded compression die for the crimp.
7) Where is the Color Keyed 54857BE lug made?
Manufactured in Mexico under the Blackburn Color Keyed line. Useful if your project carries country-of-origin reporting on submittals.
