Thomas & Betts BC-3 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the BC-3 conduit body come with a cover and gasket, or do I order those separately?
Covers and gaskets are separate part numbers. For the BC-3 the die cast cover is CV-3 and the stamped aluminum cover is SCV-3; gaskets are GKV-3 in composition and GKN-3 in neoprene. Pick one cover and, if the location needs sealing, one gasket to go with it.
2) How many cubic inches does a 1 inch Type C conduit body give me for conductor fill calculations?
The BC-3 has an 11.8 cubic inch wiring chamber. That is the number to use when you are checking box fill or splice volume for the conductors passing through or spliced inside it.
3) Should I use a Type C conduit body or an LB/LL style for my run?
A Type C like the BC-3 is a straight-through pull body: both openings are in line, so it gives you an access point for pulling and splicing in the middle of a long straight run. If you need to change direction, around a corner or into a wall, a Type L body (LB, LL, LR) is the one to use instead. The BC-3's spacious chamber and smooth throats are aimed at the pull, not the turn.
4) What is the Crouse-Hinds equivalent to the Thomas & Betts BC-3 Type C conduit body?
The closest Crouse-Hinds counterpart is the C15MTC-6 Condulet Type C conduit outlet body, which is a combination EMT body in the Condulet Series 5 line. Both are Type C bodies, meaning a straight-through pull and splice chamber with the opening on the side. The Thomas & Betts BC-3 is die cast aluminum, 1 inch trade size, with 11.8 cubic inches of wiring volume, and is listed for use with EMT conduit. Confirm the trade size you need matches before swapping, and order the cover and gasket separately for the BC-3: die cast cover CV-3 or stamped aluminum cover SCV-3, with gasket GKV-3 in composition or GKN-3 in neoprene.
5) Can I buy a single BC-3 conduit body, or is there a minimum order quantity?
The BC-3 is sold each but moves in multiples of 5. Inner pack is 5 and the carton is 25, so a 20 piece job order fills cleanly while 18 pieces will round up.
6) Is the BC-3 conduit body aluminum or steel, and is it UL listed?
Die cast aluminum body, UL listed, and RoHS compliant. Each piece weighs 0.56 lbs, light enough that a run of these on strut adds very little to the support load.
7) What else is available if I need a Type C conduit body that handles both EMT and rigid?
The Crouse-Hinds C15MTC-6 Condulet, from the Condulet Series 5 line, is a Type C outlet body built as a combination EMT fitting. The Thomas & Betts BC-3 is EMT only, so where a drawing calls for a combination body the Crouse-Hinds is the one to look at.
8) My run is rigid conduit, not EMT - is the BC-3 still the right body?
The Thomas & Betts BC-3 is specified for use with EMT conduit, so for a threaded rigid or IMC run you want a threaded-hub Type C body instead. The Crouse-Hinds C15MTC-6 Condulet is a combination EMT body in the Condulet Series 5 line, so it is not the answer for threaded rigid either. Match the body's connection style to the raceway in the wall before ordering, and keep the trade size consistent with the 1 inch run the BC-3 serves.
9) Will the cover screws fall out when I open a BC-3 in the field?
No. The BC-3 uses retained stainless steel cover screws, so they stay with the cover when you back them off, which matters when you are working off a ladder or over a ceiling grid.
