The 4972NM accepts cable from 0.500 inch (12.7mm) up to 0.750 inch (19.0mm) outside diameter. Measure the jacket OD of the cord, not the conductor size. Anything thinner than 1/2 inch will not get proper grip from the gland, and anything over 3/4 inch will not pass through.

The elbow body turns the cord immediately at the enclosure wall, so you need far less clearance behind or below the box than a straight gland plus a cable bend. That matters on equipment mounted tight to a wall, in a control cabinet, or where a straight entry would force the cord into a tight radius. The 4972NM's gland nut is built to restrict cable bending at the entry, and the body is kept small to fit tighter spaces. If you have open room and a straight cord run, a straight connector is simpler.

Rated -34 to +105 degrees C (roughly -29 to 221 F), which covers unheated outdoor equipment rooms through hot motor and luminaire enclosures.

It is non-metallic: polyamide (nylon 6.6) in black. Nylon won't rust or pit the way a steel or zinc fitting will, which is why it gets used on wet-location and washdown equipment. For an application that calls out a metallic fitting or needs bonding continuity through the connector, you need a metal cord grip instead.

Strain relief is built in. The gland compresses on the cord jacket and holds it, so pull on the cord is taken by the connector and not by the terminations inside the enclosure. No separate cord grip or Kellems-style sleeve is needed within the 1/2 to 3/4 inch cable range.
